BANGKOK, 24 April 2013  The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is launching a new strategy aimed at environmental protection, as part of the preparation of the Thai capital for the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) in 2015.

Deputy Bangkok Governor Jumpol Sumpaopol, on Tuesday, chaired the press conference on the introduction of the BMA’s environmental protection campaign, which Srinakharinwirot University acts as an advisor to the project.

According to the BMA, the new campaign will study the potential of all BMA offices before Thailand enters AEC and determine how their preparation will impact the capital and its residents.

Under this initiative, the BMA will also introduce an 11-month-long environmental protection strategy for 2014-2017, which will focus on educating and building public awareness on the importance of environment among BMA officers and the public.

Mr. Jumpo added that, when the AEC is up and running, there will be freer mobilization of labors, goods, services and investment within the region. He reckons that such a scenario will inevitably pose an impact on the environment and the quality of life of Thai people.

The Deputy Bangkok Governor said the BMA hopes the campaign and the strategy will make the capital residents become more alert and join hands in promoting the environment of Bangkok ahead of the AEC.
