BANGKOK, 27 July 2015 – The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is speeding up assistance to people who are affected by the drought crisis, along with its repair of damaged roads across the capital.

After a meeting of BMA executives chaired by Bangkok Governor MR Sukhumbhand Paribatra, BMA Spokeswoman Treedao Apaiwong revealed that the meeting was aimed to follow up on the drought situation within Bangkok. She said the executives acknowledged a report indicating that 362 households have been impacted by drought while over a thousand rai of farmland has sustained damage from the water shortage and seawater intrusion.

The board thus assigned the Department of Drainage and Sewerage to coordinate with the government in providing help to the drought victims and relieving their plight, especially by disseminating knowledge addressing the cultivation of alternative crops that are resistant to dry conditions.

The meeting was also informed of drought-induced damage, such as cracking and subsidence, on a total of 19 roads in Bangkok. Related units have already been instructed to fix the roads and some of them are expected to be ready for normal use again in August.
