Bhutan to send 12,000 workers to Thailand

BANGKOK, 30 January 2015 – The Kingdom of Bhutan is seeking to establish a Memorandum of Understanding with Thailand on the employment of 12,000 Bhutanese workers in Thailand.

The Thai Minister of Labour Gen. Surasak Karnjanarat welcomed the Bhutan Minister for Labour and Human Resources Ngeema Sangay Chenpo. They both discussed the employment of Bhutanese workers in Thailand.

Both sides have agreed to establish the joint committee on the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signing between the Thai Ministry of Labour and Bhutan Ministry of Labour and Human Resources on the legal employment of 12,000 Bhutanese workers in Thailand.

The Ministry of Labour’s Bureau of Coordination For International Cooperation will be Thailand’s representing agency on this matter. The details for the MOU is expected to be visible by March.

The Bhutan Minister for Labour and Human Resources said that Bhutanese workers are capable of communicating in foreign languages. The minister also assured that there will be no complications from illegal Bhutanese workers going into Thailand, due to the fact that both countries do not share a border.

Bhutanese workers will be clear through immigration only at the Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok.
