Banglamung District trained local fishermen on how to make artificial reefs for growing coral.

District Chief Chakorn Kanchawattana opened the May 25 workshop aimed at laying reefs in the shallow coastal waters of Moo 2 and 3 villages. Many fishermen attended the training.

Charkorn said Banglamung has about 160 kilometers of shoreline and is a source for “aquaculture” and fisheries with about 500 families dependent on the sea.

The expansion of the Laem Chabang Port has impacted usable fishing areas, thus development of new fish habitats is needed. Coral reefs draw fish to their proximity.

The training project on how to create artificial reefs also provided knowledge and created understanding among participants on the use of nets in fishing and how bottom dragging can destroy habitats and that some nets can also sweep up juvenile animals that should not yet be caught.
