More than 50 people were arrested in a crime sweep launched by Special Branch police in Pattaya.

Pol. Maj. Gen. Surachet Hakpal, the 191 branch commander, said the operation targeted prostitutes, drug dealers and petty thieves. The sweep was separate from another operation at the same time with the Chonburi Immigration Office targeting fugitives and transnational criminals.

Surachet said at the conclusion of the crackdown Sept. 28 that 36 suspected hookers, including 19 foreigners and six transvestites, were arrested, along with 11 drug users and two alleged dealers.

He also announced the arrests of three Cambodians who allegedly pickpocketed a Russian tourist on Koh Larn. He said they admitted their crime, claiming they didn’t make enough money working in a restaurant on the island.
