Lieutenant General Sakon said teachers in the southern border provinces have not been able to work to the full extent because of the violence committed against the innocent and educational institutes. This has in turn affected the education provided to children in the area. According to Lt. Gen. Sakon, providing security for teachers from the moment they leave their residences for school till the moment they return has been marked as a mission of prime importance by the Internal Security Operations Command, the Army commander-in-chief, and the prime minister.
The 4th Army chief indicated that although losses have scaled down, teacher casualties still come about.
According to the Deep South Watch center at Prince of Songkhla University Pattani Campus, 164 educational personnel have lost their lives since January 4, 2004; 88 have suffered injuries.
