Region 2 Police commander Lt. Gen. Dr. Punya Maamen hosted the launch ceremony in South Pattaya Sept. 28 with city and provincial leaders on hand.
Punya said the safety zone concept stems from national government priorities to create confidence among tourists about their personal safety. Walking Street is the city’s most-important tourist zone, he said, as there are many there to shop or be entertained.
Reporters converge on police officials doing a walk through of Walking Street.
Working with Pattaya Police, officials will upgrade crime suppression efforts and security systems, including closed-circuit television camera coverage. But Punya said cooperation from the public is also necessary if the effort is to succeed.
Police have instituted foot patrols and organized traffic police and quick-response troops, along with volunteers, to work shifts on the busy street. There also will be advertising to enlist businesses to become part of the protection.
City and regional police agencies will cooperate in installing more lights and cameras all over the city to prevent crime and maintain security.
