The Soi Kophai Community has come up with another locally made product its residents can make to earn extra money: dish soap made with kaffir limes.

Community President Wirat Joijinda hosted the April 7 workshop aimed at giving local residents a primary or secondary income by making unique local products, or just to save money.

One way is to produce dish-washing liquid. Production of a two-liter bottle is only 70 baht and can be sold for 100 baht, or smaller bottles at higher per-milliliter prices, he said.

The kaffir lime, or also known as the makrut lime, grows like a bush with double leaves like the shape of an hourglass. The leaves have an aromatic scent and the twigs are full of thorns.

The rind of the kaffir lime is commonly used in Lao and Thai curry paste, adding an aromatic, astringent flavor. They can be used fresh or dried, and can be stored frozen.

The kaffir lime is a rough, bumpy green fruit and the citrus within and can be extracted for many things, including dish-washing fluid.
