Sattahip holds Buddhist celebration to commemorate enlightenment anniversary

Sattahip opened its celebration of 2,600 years of Buddhist enlightenment with a religious ceremony at Samakhee Banpot Temple.

Sattahip Mayor Phawat Lertmukda presided over the May 25 event attended by Sattahip council members, temple Abbot Kaseam Kittisophon and about 1,000 local residents.

Sattahip Administrative Organization Secretary Wanchat Wannapharahom said 2012 marks the 2,600th anniversary of Lord Buddha’s enlightenment, which is celebrated each year on Visakha Bucha Day. In preparation for the holiday, which fell on June 4 this year, Sattahip officials have organized a string of commemorations throughout the year to encourage residents to worship and adhere to Buddhist principles.
