Pattaya pharmacists trained community health volunteers on household medications to ensure proper use and safety.

Pattaya Hospital lead pharmacist Chatchaya Charnwaet and staffers led the Dec. 12 workshop at city hall, offering information on the makeup and use of over-the-counter medications.

Topics covered included storage of medications, such as pain relievers. They told volunteers that normal medications are safe for general use with little chance of addiction or harm. But as our Dr. Iain Corness says, it’s all down to dosage.  Never exceed the recommended dosage.

Fifteen types of common medication were covered, including analgesics, antihistamines, bloating, diarrhea, eye drops, skin lotions and more.

Praphon Angtrakool, a deputy secretary for the Food and Drug Administration, said paracetamol was the usual first choice for ailments in adults and children ranging from headaches, but should not be taken by those with kidney disease, ulcers or asthma.

Pharmacists told the volunteers that medicine cabinets must be big enough so all drugs inside can be easily checked for expiration. Drugs should be stored high enough to be out of reach of children.
