More Africans arrested for Facebook scam in Pattaya

Area police made their third arrest in as many months of Africans suspected of using Facebook to scam Thai women out of their money.

Pattaya and Chonburi officers apprehended members of the so-called 149 Scam gang Feb. 14 at the LV Apartments on So Luebamroon in South Pattaya.

Nigerians Williams Chinwendu Nna, 39, Kenneth Ovuegbe, 40, Emmanuel Onyedikachi Iromuanya, 32, Uchechukwu Nwaogou, 30, Mater Ukwucu, 26, and Udoji Fidelis Anaekwe, 31; and Ghanaian Kofi Mansah, 37, were taken into custody and booked on immigration charges for expired visas and illegal entry into the kingdom.

Investigators seized seven notebook computers, 11 mobile phones, and three tablet computers.

Chonburi police commander Maj. Gen. Nitipong Niamnoi alleged the gang had set up social-media accounts using photos of young and handsome westerners to pretend they were millionaires seeking Thai brides. More than 100 women were scammed out of more than 10 million baht, he said.

Police said the gang members confessed to running their scam for five years.

Regional police arrested two other groups of Nigerians engaged in similar activities in November in East Pattaya.
