They’ve prayed for luck from cemetery headstones, golden trees, banana bunches and snakes. But now superstitious Sattahip gamblers have started asking a supposedly “haunted” Sukhumvit Road kilometer marker for winning lottery numbers.

The post near Nern Samakee at Sukhumvit’s 164th kilometer heading towards Bang Saray has attracted a crowd after the scuttlebutt said it was inhabited by a spirit.

Salivating lotto players have been worshipping the post, giving it red Fanta and other offerings.

Preecha Phipatpol, head of the Sawang Viroj Thamsatan Foundation, said the area previously had a huge ficus tree growing there that was hundreds of years old and people always sought lucky-number inspiration from its leaves and bark.

Many local residents were fortunate and won, so the lottery dealers got angry and burned the tree down.

Now there’s only a kilometer post there but they believe spirits remain.

Many people have lost their lives at that point of the road in accidents and locals believe one or most ghosts is roaming around the post, handing out numbers, especially on the night before the twice-monthly draw.

Their fantasies have been fueled by someone who is either drinking our pouring out the sickly sweet red soda, leading those looking for proof with “evidence” the spirits needed a sugar fix.
