Government officials inspected Pattaya’s Redemptorist Center for Persons with Disabilities, reviewing courses key to a public-private cooperative job placement program.

National Office for Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities Secretary Napa Setthakorn toured the Redemptorist Vocational School July 5, seeing how students were trained to prepare them for careers.

The Redemptorist Center has partnered with the NEP, Ministry of Social Development and Human Stability and the Rajnukul Foundation in the “Life Skills Preparation for Stable Careers for the Disabled” program. Together, the school and government aim to develop career skills and place the disabled in jobs. It also is working to set up “sheltered workshops” for the mentally handicapped.

Napa said the program has already shown that the disabled are no less able than non-disabled people to learn new skills. Unemployment is more due to a lack of awareness among employers and a lack of contacts to find jobs for the disabled, she said.

“This project acts as a network to find work for the disabled as we want them to have stable careers,” Napa said.
