Pattaya Mayor Itthiphol Kunplome launched his re-election campaign with videos and a mascot promoting his idea of a “new look” for the city.

At an April 24 press conference at the Amari Orchid Resort, the mayor played his taped presentation on his vision of the future for the city, claiming it to be a selling point for attracting tourists and investors.

“We will not stop announcing to the world that Pattaya is one of the most-important tourism destinations in the world,” Itthiphol said. “We will push our master plan and develop Pattaya to be ready and have the potential to develop, with investments in infrastructure such as a rail link from Suvarnabhumi International Airport.”

Hoping to give his re-election bid professional-looking polish, the mayor not only had a video created, but marketing slogan, logos and mascot. Under the “Pattaya’s New Look” title was a subhead of “Pattaya City - Definitely More.” The logo uses a dolphin to stress a resort that balances tourism with the environment.

“Giving importance to nature along with growth of the city is the first priority in managing a system for tourists to see the perfection and readiness of Pattaya’s natural resources,” the mayor said.

The mayor plans to launch a naming contest for the dolphin on the logo and advertise his “new look” on television, radio and online.

The mayor is doing as good a job as can be done with what he has to work with. No one politician can oversee so many police or other officials. I think those foreigners who complain should consider a return to their own countries. I have been a happy expat here for five years. Probably I am happy because I don't hold up the end of a bar all night. Many areas in both Jomtien and Pattaya could use a sprucing up and removal of hundreds of illegal signs advertising junk. Even at the Hannuman Statue in Jomtien there is an illegal sign behind the statue for a hotel. Silly things that we foreigners see, but seem not to bother the officials. We do not vote, perhaps our Western eyes for these things are unimportant. I have only found helpful police, don't use jet skis and am seldom on the beach past 10:00 AM morning walks. IMHO you just do not go everywhere in any city an anticipate perfect safety at all hours.

well said James. the mayor must think that the international community are children. making a video and dressing people up in costumes will do nothing to solve the evil wickedness that is put upon innocent tourists by the scourge of Pattaya. the immorality and corruption is daily in this town and the police look on with smiles, yes, the wonderful smile of thailand. the whole idea of being a mayor is doing things that will make a difference.

Does the new look include the dolphin logos added to the Jet Ski's used to SCAM hundreds of dollars from your tourists ? That might be a nice touch. No one deserves to be "re-elected" if they can not solve ongoing and so pubilicly talked about crimes that continue to happen on the beaches. The "police" are called, and yet, the scam continues with their help. I wonder, who really runs Pattaya ???
