New buoys marking swimming areas are popping up on Pattaya-area beaches, providing more safety for swimmers and better looks for the shoreline.

The wide, red-and-white barriers replace round orange buoys that marked several locations along Pattaya and Jomtien beaches and have received positive reviews from both beach-goers and boat operators.

“This is an improvement,” said Vichai Tawameesouk, a 32-year-old jet ski vendor. “These barriers were provided about two weeks ago and we are really happy. Swimmers now have their own areas and accidents have not been reported so far.”

The new floating barriers are made of heavy-duty plastic and people are able to walk on them easily, current allowing. Swimmers seemed to be quite happy with the areas provided as well.

“Finally,” said Songsak Thongsook, one of the few lifeguards actually working on the beach. “Boats and jet skis were simply ignored by swimmers, but now that these barriers are here, I believe it’s a big improvement.”
