A British expat enjoying Loy Krathong returned home to find his safe containing more than 700,000 baht in cash and jewelry missing.

Edmund Catterall, 63, called police to his Raviporn Place house early Nov. 29 to show them a broken fence and door which had been pried open by burglars. His 12-by-12 cm safe containing 10,000 baht, 13,000 British pounds, $500, two phones and a watch had been stolen.

Catterall said he’d been out celebrating Loy Krathong and returned home around 11 p.m. to discover the burglary. Police said the burglary was likely done by more than one person who had been staking out the house, waiting for the Briton’s departure.
