Sattahip officials arrested the boastful alleged leader of a gang of bag snatchers who considered district police so incompetent, he intentionally showed his face on a surveillance camera.

Peerapong Sae-ueng, 19, was captured Dec. 13 at his home in Nongprue Sub-district. Police seized his Honda motorbike, a gold chain, a gold ring and nine famed gold amulets.

Authorities also issued an arrest warrant for Phanuwat Anthiros, 18, and said three other unnamed gang members are still being pursued.

Lt. Col. Pawatchai Sudsakorn said the gang operated by using two motorbikes. One would get in front of an intended target and slow down the victim while the other would ride by and steal their handbag. More than 20 cases have been tied to them in Sattahip in the past seven months.

Investigators said Peerapong was released in May from a juvenile-detention facility after committing about 20 similar crimes in Pattaya. Once he was released he set up a new gang, police claimed, adding that Peerapong said he chose to move to Sattahip because he viewed district police as incompetent.

He’d been so successful there that, recently, he dared police to find him by showing his face on camera. He was easily apprehended after that.
