More than 300 Sattahip youngsters are using their school holidays to brush up on English, math and other subjects in a “summer camp” offered by Khet Udomsak.

While technically not summer until the summer solstice in June, the March 13-29 camp is patterned on summer schools and camps in the west, where schools take breaks during July and August, instead of Thailand’s March and April break.

Khet Udomsak Mayor Pairoj Malakil Na Ayuthaya opened the orientation session March 13 at Sunghsamut School. Secretary Somboon Chumpalee said 320 students had signed up for the camp, which offers English-language, math and computer classes.

Pairoj said the city offered the camp as a way to give kids a productive way to spend their free time and keep them away from drugs and socially unacceptable behavior.
