The 19-year-old Nong Plailai woman was, of course, delighted to have brought three young girls into the world. She hadn’t known before their birth she has having more than one. But now a single mother of four, she is struggling to feed her new family.

Parawee said the father of the triplets left her a month after she became pregnant and refuses to take responsibility for the children. She already had another daughter from another man who abandoned her. She admits it would have been a lot easier to have had an illegal abortion, but was glad she let her parents talk her out of it.
She now lives with five other people in a single room in Banglamung, with only her parents to support all nine.
A pressing concern for her is baby formula, diapers and other child care needs, expenses for which have now tripled. She said she wants to make a good life for her daughters and set them a good example, but she says she needs help.
