BANGKOK, 20 April 2012  – The Ministry of Transport is proposing plans to procure new NGV passenger buses in a bid to reduce its energy cost in the long run.

Deputy Transport Minister Chatchart Sitthipan said today that as part of the ministry’s plans to revamp the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA)’s bus fleet, the ministry is coordinating with State Enterprise Policy Office to replace older diesel buses with NGV ones.

Older buses have higher operating costs and emissions, which pose a sizable financial burden to the BMTA.

Meanwhile, BMTA Deputy Director, Narade Boonpiam, said the declining number of bus passengers during this period is due to students being away on school breaks, and not due to the summer heat.
