Royal Thai Police reaffirm no policy to repatriate Cambodian laborers

BANGKOK, 16 June 2014  – The Royal Thai Police have restated that Thailand doesn’t have any policy to repatriate Cambodian laborers, and is accelerating investigations into the origin of this rumor.

Pol Gen Watcharapol Prasarnrajkit, deputy Police Chief and acting National Police Chief, noted that the rumor has caused damage to the Kingdom and currently the police are investigating the source of it. There has been no violence against them.

Separately, Pol Gen Chatchawan Suksomjit, deputy Police Chief, stated that the police have been enforcing laws against the those who’ve been protecting illegal laborers. According to the statistics, such cases rose 120 percent, court proceedings jumped 590 percent, and court rulings also surged 360 percent.

He added that Thailand had sent its report on the suppression of human trafficking to the United States to demonstrate its intention to take the problem seriously. Meanwhile, news reports have mentioned Thailand as a center of human trafficking, an item released with the clear intention of discrediting the country as it affects the Thai economy.
