KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 24  Malaysia would see an influx of Chinese phones next year, multiplying the intensity of competition in the smartphone market here.

IDC, the global provider of market intelligence and advisory services, said the influx would be a game changer for Malaysia’s mobile phone business environment.

“Vendors that used to dominate would likely be seen changing gears to improve their strategies in order to compete effectively again,” it said in a statement today.

IDC said a massive growth for smartphones was recorded as of third quarter 2014 and the growth was due to the influx of Chinese and Taiwanese smartphones that emerged around second quarter 2014.

“This left well-known smartphone giants like Samsung, Apple and Sony in a state of decline as consumers turned to Chinese handsets as the phones were considered value-for-money.

“The phones also have reasonable specifications that allowed them to install and run various free essential apps without facing much issue,” it said.
