BANGKOK, 27 July 2012  – The Labor Ministry has affirmed thatfrom mid-December immigrant labors will be legally allowed to work in Thailand only via the Government-to-Government arrangement .

Labor Minister Phadermchai Sasomsub said that, Myanmar President Thein Sein has asked Thailand to facilitate the employment, the transfer of wage and the skill training for Myanmar workers in the country.

Mr. Phadermchai said that the Thai government has assured the Myanmar President that all legal workers will receive full state assistance under the condition that each will be allowed to work in the country for the duration of 2 years, or up to 4 years with renewed permit.

In order to uphold this pledge, the Labor Minister said that all workers from Myanmar will have to seek employment in Thailand only via an official agreement between both countries and with valid passport.

Mr. Phadermchai added that after the nationality verification for more than 500,000 immigrant workers is completed by December 14th, no registration of alien labor will be opened again.

He went on to say that, as Thai laws forbid the allocation of state budget to train immigrant labors, the Department of Employment has been assigned to look for ways to make the skill development program possible for alien workers.
