The Thai government led by the Department of Labor Protection and Welfare has inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on labor in the poultry industry.

The Department of Labor Protection and Welfare signed the agreement with the Department of Livestock Development and the Broiler Processing Exporters Association of Thailand to promote good labor practices and prevent child labor in the poultry industry.

Under the agreement, the three agencies will educate entrepreneurs about labor codes of conduct and prevention of child labor, asking that poultry farmers and business operators abide by the law and international standards.

It’s also hoped that the move will eliminate forced labor and human trafficking in the poultry industry, and ensure that workers are treated the way they are supposed to be treated.

There are more than 15,000 poultry farms and at least 300,000 poultry workers in Thailand.
