BANGKOK, 27 February 2012  – The Office of the National Economic and Social Development Board (NESDB) has disclosed that the employment rate during the fourth quarter of 2011 grew by 0.9%, while unemployment was as low as 0.6%.

NESDB Secretary-General Akom Termpittayapaisit has announced that the employment rate during the last quarter of 2011 saw an increase of 0.9% even though Thailand was suffering from the flood crisis. Concerns among entrepreneurs that the labour market might become tight, as a result of growing demand for workers after the floods, has led them to hire more employees. Meanwhile, the number of the workers unemployed during the period dropped to 240,000, equivalent to 0.6% in comparison with the previous year’s.

Mr. Akom believed that employment rate would continue to grow in 2012 despite the government’s minimum wage hike policy.
