BANGKOK, 15 May 2015 – The Ministry of Commerce has appointed a committee specifically to examine the quality of over 9 tons of corn in the government’s stock before a new round of bidding begins.

Commerce Minister General Chatchai Sarikalaya said that the committee would be in charge of assuring the quality of corn to be used in producing animal feed under the government’s corn market intervention policy.

The committee has been told to complete its task 45 days before the auction is scheduled to be held. Although as much as 4.801 million tons of corn is expected to be produced in Thailand this year– 1,000 tons more than it did last year–the amount is barely enough for domestic use.

Th make the matter worse, an average of 300,000 tons of corn is exported each year. The buying price remains relatively high, at 9.5 baht per kilogram.
