BANGKOK, 2 June 2011 – The Ministry of Commerce has set a target to increase Thai exports to Russia by 50 percent this year with a value of over 1 billion USD while marketing strategies will also be intensified.

Commerce Minister Pornthiva Nakasai revealed that Thailand would start focusing on penetrating the Russian market with a goal to achieve an export growth of 50 percent, from 700 million USD in export value last year to 1.05 billion USD this year. From January to April, Thai exports to Russia have already reached 400 million USD.

Air conditioners are among the products highly demanded by the Russian market, thanks to the longer summer and higher temperatures in the Arctic country as a result of the global warming crisis. Other products include automobile and parts, rice, chicken and instant foods.

As Russia is considered a new and significant export market for Thailand, Ms Pornthiva elaborated that the office of foreign trade in Russia had been instructed to step up its marketing strategies, ranging from the display of Thai products at local trade fairs to more frequent arrangement of meetings between trade representatives of both countries.
