BANGKOK, 27 May 2014 – The Chambers of Commerce has indicated that the economy could improve in the latter half of the year as consumer confidence gets better following the seizing of power by the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO).

Representatives from chambers of commerce from all 5 regions met on Monday to discuss the current situation, and came to consensus that the ceasing of political protests would restore consumer confidence. They also viewed that the NCPO’s policy to speedily disburse money owed to rice farmers would increase liquidity in the economy.

According to the chambers of commerce, economic growth may reach 3% this year if the situation remains stable. This would be an improvement from the earlier 1.5% growth forecast by the private sector.

According to a survey of the opinions from all provincial chambers of commerce, 46.40% viewed that the economy will improve in the 2nd half of the year.

The chambers of commerce will meet again before they present their economic stimulus suggestions, which will emphasize border trade, to the NCPO.
