Banknote line leads to progress on bell tower

The final length of the money line, which stretched from the bell tower to the Buddha image, was 58 meters.

Patcharapol Panrak
A Songkran ceremony held at Wat Theprasart in Sattahip had a novel way of making merit, by joining banknotes together to form a 58-meter long chain leading to the Buddha image.
The ceremony took place on April 17 with devotees making a presentation of robes to the monks and presenting money for making merit. The funds will be used for the building of a new drum tower and bell chamber.
Presenting the yellow robes to the monks symbolizes a farewell to the old year and a welcome to the new one. People presented banknotes of all denominations up to 1,000 baht, and these were laid in line from the front of the bell tower to the Buddha image. The final length of the line of money was 58 meters, said assistant abbot Boonsong Jantimo.
The amount of money collected was 145,751 baht, which will allow work on the partially completed tower and bell chamber to continue. The tower is for ringing a bell in the morning and evening so the monks know the times of their activities.

St George’s Congregation meets to celebrate English National Day

The St. George’s Congregation, who meet at the Chapel in the Redemptorist Center off Sukhumvit Road, celebrated a service commemorating the Patron Saint of England.
In the course of his address Revd Allan Sherratt traced the background of the person of the real St George and set against it the mythological tradition that led to his being chosen as the Patron of England as an example of all that is good and chivalrous in a soldier - especially at that time of the Crusades.

Revd Allan Sherratt presided over St. George Congregation’s celebration commemorating the Patron Saint of England.
Making reference to how George became the patron of a country he never even visited, it was left to St George’s Day parades by the Scouting and Guiding fraternities to keep the memory alive. Revd Allan also showed how nowadays much more is made of St Patrick for Ireland and many other countries than England - no doubt the “demotion” of George in the rankings of celebrations in the Roman Church where George no longer ranks high in the ratings but only a commemoration and optional at that!
Nevertheless a good number of people came and celebrated and ate Parkin afterwards as a traditional English cake.
The Congregation meets each Sunday at 3 p.m. for traditional Book of Common Prayer worship. Anyone who is a Anglican, Episcopalian or member of a Church in communion with the Church Of England is welcome to attend. Contact Revd. Allan Sherratt or send him an e-mail on [email protected]

After the service, members of the congregation met for tea.
