Rotary Club of Bangkok South hosts annual Kids Day Out 2005

Every year the very active Rotary Club of Bangkok South brings children from the Pak Kred Center for Disabled Children to the beach. This year, Don Lavoie, Rotary Club of Bangkok South president, in cooperation with the local Rotary Clubs of Jomtien Pattaya and Taksin Pattaya, brought 300 children to play, swim and enjoy time out at the Royal Varuna Yacht Club.

Lots of fun and games works up a thirst.

Rotarians and volunteers kept a close eye on the children as they frolicked about in the sunshine on the beachfront. Those who did not swim played on the grass at the club and for some it was the first time they had seen a beach.

The Rotary Club of Bangkok South has been carrying out this activity for the last 10 years, bringing children from the center to enjoy a day outside the confines of the Pak Kred Center.

This year’s event was sponsored by the Royal Varuna Yacht Club and Castrol, both organizations are committed to providing a better quality of life for the disabled children.

Cool...

Eckie the Clown provides much laughter and entertainment for the children.

For some of the kids, it was the first time they saw the ocean.

The kids arrive at the Royal Varuna Yacht Club, filled with excited anticipation of the fun day ahead.

GIS teachers and pupils host children from Camillian Centre

Teachers and pupils at Garden International School (GIS) have organized for the fourth consecutive year activities for the children at Camillian Centre in Rayong.

Fun and challenging...

Thirty-seven children from Camillian came to the school and had lunch together before joining activities provided for the different class levels, from kindergarten to the higher classes. Teachers and pupils had prepared a variety of activities including basic art, paper folding and computer use, and the children had plenty of fun.

At the end of the activities, teachers and pupils handed out Songkran gift boxes containing toys, clothes and sweets to four children, Nong Mint, Nong Chomphu, Nong Mee and Nong June.

GIS and Pattaya International Ladies Club (PILC) had joined forces to present carved sandals made by children from the Youth Training and Practice Centre in Region 3, Rayong Province. With PILC’s Ms Helle Rantsen present, the sandals were given to the children as gifts.

This occasion, as in previous years, was one of happiness and support for underprivileged people in society. Organized annually by GIS, the emphasis is on sharing and helping others. GIS students took about five weeks to fill the gift boxes to give to the chosen children, and there was much excitement when the gifts were presented.

The children greatly enjoyed all the activities.

The children have lots of fun learning new games.

Teachers divided the pupils into groups to join in the activities.

PILC enjoys Songkran celebrations at Captain’s Table, Ocean Marina

The Pattaya International Ladies Club’s monthly lunch meeting was held recently at the elegant Captain’s Table Restaurant at Ocean Marina, and what a spectacular affair it was.

(L to R) PILC President Sharon Tibbitts, Welfare Chair Helle Rantsen and Bronwyn Carey-Little, Helping Hands representative present 50,000 baht of the Tsunami Relief Fund to the Helping Hands Organization’s milk program.

This is an excellent opportunity for the ladies of the club to get together with new and old friends. The hospitality secretary, Rita Cromwell, works very hard to find new venues and make the events welcoming and memorable. She succeeded extremely well this month, and the ladies would like to join together to say a big “Thank You” to her, and to the staff of the Ocean Marina who all worked hard to make the event so enjoyable.

On arrival at the beautiful inlaid marble foyer of the Marina reception, guests were greeted by Thai dancers and musicians, who also entertained the group during lunch with dances and music from various regions of Thailand.

In addition, a traditional celebration of Songkran, paying respect to the elders, was beautifully performed by some of the younger members of the group, and Dinie de Vries was delighted to have her 60th birthday marked again by being chosen as a recipient of the homage. Fortunately we didn’t have any water throwing, but are all looking forward to that during the celebrations in Pattaya next week.

Dinie de Vries, Sharon Tibbitts and Judy Clausen receive the tradition Songkran blessing of water on their hands.

On a more serious note, Helle Rantsen, as chair of the welfare committee, was delighted to present cheques to two of the group’s chosen charitable projects, the Mercy Ministry (with the cheque being received by Diane Doell) and the Helping Hands project (set up by several members of the PILC as a separate entity), to help recoverers from the tsunami. Bronwyn Little-Carey told the group a little about the project and advised that the monies received would go towards nutritional school lunches for children in the worst hit areas, and for formula and milk for needy mothers and children.

The ladies then had a splendid lunch buffet of Thai food, with delicious specialities from different regions around Thailand – beautifully cooked and presented, and an opportunity for us all to try something new. It was a real treat, and our thanks again to everyone involved, who made it happen!
