A birthday for someone special
It was a day just like any other day at Shenanigans. A
wedding here, a birthday party there, or even a bar-mitzvah celebration. But
mostly the gatherings are friends and acquaintances sharing war stories over
a couple of pints. I
wish…I wish
But not on this particular day. This day was a very
special day. It was the day that Kim Fletcher, landlord of the renowned
Irish pub, celebrated the birthday of someone really special and that jewel
was none other than Pat.
Pat, looking radiant in a gold and turquoise dress (she
was to look even sexier in her Wonder Woman outfit at the Jester’s Pub
Night), walked into the room and the whole crowd became silent, aw-struck by
her beauty. Then she smiled and the whole room lit up as if by a thousand
candles. The guests clapped and cheered and there was happiness everywhere.
As Kim presented Pat with a beautiful bouquet of roses, we heard her
whisper, “Today I am only 21 years old!”
Friends, staff and practically everyone in the pub attended the party.
Pat joined her hands together in a ‘wai’ as she closed her eyes to make
a wish to all that is sacred and then blew out the candles. Yes, we
sincerely hope your wish comes true.
That
my wish
comes true.

birthday. His age was not mentioned, but we all believe it to be over 21!
Phil
“The Shirt” Clear says thanks to all his friends for attending his
birthday party.
Phil holds an annual party at the Bowling Club where he
invites all his friends to come and help celebrate his birthday.
As always, Phil invites the English speaking Lions Club
to take part in the raffle and auction - this year an amazing amount, in
excess of 29,000 baht, was raised for needy children in Pattaya.
The Lions Club had also planned to hold a lawn bowling competition
prior to the party but unfortunately they had to cancel this because of
heavy rain.

Young lovers exchange marriage vows
Ariyawat Nuamsawat
Last week at the Dusit Resort Pattaya, another glamorous
wedding party was held to celebrate the marriage of Sarit and Manpreet
Dangmaneerat.
The
happy newlyweds (back row, center) pose with family and friends at their
weeding reception.
The groom, Sarit, is one of two sons of Phichai and Kumud
Dangmaneerat, the owners of one of the oldest tailors in the town, Maharaja
Tailor. Sarit has been working as an onboard steward for Thai Airways for
over 8 years. The beautiful bride, Manpreet, earned a bachelor degree from
Mahidol University International College and worked at CITI Bank until she
married the love of her life.
They revealed they met each other at a friend’s wedding two years ago.
They became friends and gradually their love began to grow. They said that
during their two years of courtship they followed the rules of the Indian
community and always treated each other with respect. The couple both
thanked their parents for their support and are looking forward to a long
and happy union.
Connoisseurs raise their
glasses to the god of wine
Mike Nelson
It was an evening that once again did Bacchus proud: the
Roman god of wine must have fully approved the Royal Cliff Wine Club’s
“Exclusive Wine-Tasting” evening at the Royal Cliff Grand on September
24.
Swirl
it before taking a slow long sniff by getting your nose into the glass.
About 130 members made up of private connoisseurs,
hoteliers, restaurateurs and others in the hospitality sector assemble
regularly to savour the fruits of the vine from the world’s most famous
wine-producing regions.
Four whites and four reds from France and Australia were
presented last week, sponsored by IWS (Independent Wine & Spirit
(Thailand) Co., Ltd.)
“There are three basic elements to wine tasting,”
Royal Cliff Beach Resort deputy general manager Ranjith Chandrasiri said for
the benefit of the club’s new members.
The first was to observe the colour of the wine. “The
appearance gives you a good guess of the type of grape, the age of the wine,
and whether the wine is bad. Assess the wine by tilting the glass against a
white background or holding it up to the light.”
For this, clear glass should be used, not crystal glasses
popular among some party hosts.
The intensity of red wines varied from opaque to
transparent. “Older wines tend to be brownish on the edge of the glass. If
it is cloudy, it’s probably spoiled.
The second test, Chandrasiri said, was the “nose” or
aroma of the wine. “Swirl it before taking a slow long sniff by getting
your nose into the glass, not lifting the glass to your nose,” he said.
Outside influences like perfume and flowers could
disguise the aroma, he warned.
The third test was the taste, for which one should take a
small sip - not a gulp - and hold the wine at the centre of the tongue for a
few seconds to allow the character of the wine to become apparent.
With this basic introduction given, IWS wine manager
Michel Conrad accompanied the wine tasters through the eight wines provided.
Conrad is a Swiss national who has lived in Thailand
since 1995 and gave his opinion on the wines.
They were Michel Lynch Reserve Blanc Graves AOC 2001 (“citrusy
and smoky everyday wine”); Chateau Villa Bel-Air Blanc Graves AOC 2000
(“aroma defined by soil and grape variety, perfectly matured”); Xanadu
Secession Semillon/Sauvignon Banc 2004 (“Because Australian wine is
produced in sunny southern hemisphere, the grape has a strong sugar and
alcohol content with a clear skin”); Xanadu Chardonnay 2001 (“strong
gold colour with a longer after-taste”); Michel Lynch Reserve Rouge
Bordeaux AOC 2000 (“aroma of blackberries and cherry, pleasant with a
barbeque”); Chateau Villa Bel-Air Rouge Graves AOC 1999 (“stored in oak
barrel for nine months, then for 12 months in bottle on the estate before
being released onto the market”); Xanadu Secession Merlot 2003 (“ruby
red, more spicy, rounder”); and Xanadu Cabernet Sauvignon 2000 (“strong
aroma of pepper and oak”).
Wines presented were available for sale at heavily
discounted prices.
Chandrasiri concluded the tasting by saying whether a
wine was good or bad depended ultimately on personal taste: “I love jazz
music, but jazz isn’t to everyone’s taste.”
He said The Royal Cliff Wine Club was still open to new
members. However, they need to be resident in Thailand.
