“Big Mango” - the movie
“Big Mango”, allegedly only written as a joke, is to
become a movie. According to Jake Needham his first book was simply written
as a spoof but sold so many copies that he continued his writing career and
has worked on the screenplay for the development of the movie, which will
star James Gandolfini from “The Sopranos”.
Jake
Needham signs a copy of his book, Laundry Man, for fans during the Pattaya
City Expats Club meeting August 2 at Henry J Bean’s.
Jake was in Pattaya last weekend as the guest of Richard
E. Smith, co-chairman of the Pattaya City Expats Club and was the speaker at
the PCEC Sunday Morning meeting at Henry J. Bean’s.
During a relaxed informal dinner at Casa Pascal on the
Saturday evening it became evident that the club members would be in for
both an informative and interesting talk.
Starting from his life and work in America as a lawyer
dealing in international corporate mergers and acquisitions, after his
resignation from the law firm he became an executive director of Bond
Corporation, an Australian public company and then later he acquired an
interest in Renouf Corporation, this time in New Zealand.
His acquisition of Skylark Films, a producer of
television motion pictures based in Los Angeles came in 1987 and since 1989
Jake has been writing screenplays for film and television.
During his talk Jake read various illustrations from his
books to show the development of the characters and the changing scene in
Bangkok over the years.
“Big Mango” was released in Thai language in December
2002 and “Laundry Man” appeared in Thai in December 2003. “Killing
Plato” is Jake Needham’s latest offering and has not yet appeared in
Thai. “Killing Plato” is the latest in the Jack Shepherd International
Crime series.
The PCEC chairman, Max Rommel, was pleased that Jake had finally been
able to fit the club’s meeting into his busy agenda and hoped that when
the movie is launched he might be able to return and share more of his
experiences with club members.

Showdown at the OK Corral
Head ‘em up, round ‘em out!
Showdown? More like show up at the OK Corral, as golfers, quizzers, pool
players and regular customers joined in the re-opening party at the new OK
Corral located in Soi Rungland, South Pattaya.
Everyone
enjoys the new OK Corral.
Mr. Loy and his crew laid out a veritable feast to
welcome guests to the new venue, having relocated from Soi Skaw Beach just a
day before, and there were no dreaded bandanas in sight.
At the new light and airy venue fronting the burgeoning
soi, revelers ate and drank the night away enjoying each other’s company
and chatting about their respective activities.
The OK Corral is heavily involved in the Pattaya
community, participating in the IPGC golf society, the Pattaya Pool League,
and both the Sunday and Wednesday Quiz Leagues.
With a new look and new location they’re destined to increase this even
more.
Swiss National Day marked with food, cheer and yodeling
Elfi Seitz
On August 1, the Amari Orchid Resort in Pattaya
celebrated the 713th anniversary of the founding of the Swiss Federation.
General Manager Dominik Stamm and his assistant manager Michael again did
wonders to bring a genuine alpine atmosphere into the tropical garden at the
hotel.
Swiss
flags, checkered tablecloths, the Swiss Alps in the background … was this
really in Pattaya, or were guests beamed to Switzerland?
The snow covered peaks of the Swiss Alps were prominently
displayed on a big backdrop, allowing guests to feel as if they were
actually there. A small, snow covered Swiss hut welcomed the guests at the
entrance and yodeling music entertained them during the evening.
The buffet was gigantic and alluring, like the Matterhorn
itself. One could find all the delicacies that make Switzerland famous,
including cheese in all variations, salads and fantastic meat dishes. All
spaghetti freaks were more than rewarded with a big variety.
Once again the Amari has shown their dedication to fine dining, and
superbly represented their beloved Switzerland.
