Pattayans ‘Walk for Life’ on World AIDS Day

Colorful parade sends serious message

Damri Muangkaew

December 1, each year is designated as World AIDS Day. This year more than 1000 Pattaya citizens joined forces to spread the word on HIV and AIDS prevention in the annual ‘Walk For Life’. Joining in the parade were many of the city’s businesses, school children and charity organizations, all gathering at the starting point on Beach Road near the Nova Lodge Hotel.

Children carry a globe with the message that we do not want any one to be inflicted with AIDS.

Pattaya City Mayor Pairat Suthithamrongsawat set the parade of walkers and floats on their way at 3 p.m. The colorful parade made their way along Beach Road carrying banners spreading the word on prevention, while colorful floats added a festive but serious element to the day.

Wuttisak Rermkijikarn, deputy mayor said, “The whole idea of the event is to ensure that the message of HIV and AIDS prevention is well entrenched into the hearts and minds of the populace. There is till no cure for the disease and prevention in the best method into reducing those infected.”

City fathers joined in the parade to give a moral boost in the fight against AIDS.

Thailand has won international praise for its efforts in spreading the word on disease prevention. HIV knows no boundaries and doesn’t discriminate against race, color, religion or social status. According to the World Health Organization, the number of people infected has reached into every corner of the globe. Those most at risk people who conduct unsafe sexual practices and intravenous drug users who share needles.

The thousands of walkers in Pattaya received an enthusiastic reception from the crowds that thronged the sidewalks and packed the vantage points.

We hope that the message clearly came across that Pattayans care very much about this issue and are jointly working to help those who have contracted HIV/AIDS and related symptoms. The community is also working to educate the community about the precautions and preventative means available.
