Germany wins both titles in the
FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championship U-18
The German pairs Sebastian Fuchs and Thomas Kaczmarek, Jana Kohler and
Laura Ludwig, won the boys and girls FIVB Beach Volleyball / Under
18-Championships held last weekend on Jomtien Beach, defeating the much
favored Brazilians and defending champions Pedro Solberg Salgado and Ian
Borges in the boys’ finals, while the German girls beat Carolina Solberg
Salgado and Barbara Figueiredo of Brazil in 1 hour, 6 minutes. Finals,
unlike earlier matches, were played in rainy conditions. The qualifying
rounds started August 25 and finals were held on August 31.

The German players, playing together only in their second
tournament following the European Championships, showed impressive skills,
tactics and their dominance throughout the games. In the girls’ finals the
score was 21-11, 30-32 and the deciding set 15-7 in favor of the Germans. In
the boys’ finals Fuchs and Kaczmarek defeated their Brazilian opponents in
21-19, 23-25, 18-16 sets.

German girls’ team, Fischer and Piasecki, edged out Mexico’s Estrada and
Revuelta in a nail-biting bronze match (21-19, 17-21, 15-9).
The four Thai teams were knocked out in the elimination
rounds, but put up a tough fight with three teams reaching the quarter
finals.
Teams from Brazil, Germany, Ireland, New Zealand, Hong
Kong, Switzerland, Spain, Canada, Poland, Austria, Mexico, Holland, Russia,
Venezuela and Thailand participated in the competition.

Fitness Tips: Lifting weights to lower sugars
G’day Readers,
Fitness tips this week looks further into Diabetes,
management and if possible, prevention.
There was a time when weight-lifting was thought to be
the reserve of the body beautiful classes. But with the decline in lifting
and strength-type activities in modern life, this is rapidly changing.
Restoring strength functions to replace the actions of technology, is
becoming as important for health as restoring aerobic activities.
Strength, or resistance training, is now being trial-led
with the frail and elderly, with positive outcomes even in the 9th and 10th
decade of life, particularly in reducing falls and musculo-skeletal damage.
Weight training also helps to slow down the rate of sarcopenia, or muscle
wastage in the ageing, which can lead to a decrease of up to 40% muscle mass
in 60 year-olds and older. Maintaining muscle mass also helps in weight
control as a greater muscle mass results in higher metabolic rate and hence
greater energy expenditure.
Weight lifting and
diabetes
Of even more interest to clinical practice is the role of
weight training for diabetes control in older people. Type 2 diabetes
requires increasing medication over time, making it an expensive drain on
the community. However new research by scientists in Australia and the US,
has shown that using muscles against resistance, helps ‘soak up’ blood
sugars and reduce the need for medication to do this in patients with
diabetes. Researchers at Tufts University in the US for example, have found
that a group of diabetic patients given high intensity weight training three
times a week for 16 weeks was able to decrease medication use by 72%,
whereas a control group who did not do weight training actually increased
their medication by 42% in that time. Similar results have been found in
research at the International Diabetes Institute in Australia.
What type of training?
Indications to date suggest that progressive weight
lifting, with increasing intensity is best for blood glucose control. This
should be done 2-3 times a week using 8-10 exercises for 1-2 sets of 8-10
repetitions at speeds slower than 6 seconds per repetition of the movements
full range of motion. The best types of movements are ‘compound’
exercises using the large muscles of the body to help stimulate blood sugar
disposal. Compound exercises, essentially, mean more than one bone moving at
a time i.e. a squat for the legs or press style exercise for the chest as
opposed to an isolation exercise when you have only 1 bone moving like in a
bicep curl exercise. Think about making as many of the big muscles move at
one time and you’ll have it right. If you can’t sort this out for
yourself then drop into your local Gym and get them to teach you but please
check the qualifications first, someone that has been training people for a
long period of time does not necessarily have any biomechanical training so
they are likely to teach you something that will damage you in the long run.
Take home message:
Weight lifting is an effective form of treatment for
diabetes in older people.

controlled trial of resistance exercise training to improve glycemic control

The Royal Thai Navy Course North and West Layouts were
host for a Stableford Competition on this course which continues to provide
a fine course at reasonable rates. The course has improved considerably of

Steady Ebrahim took first place with 34 points, ahead of
Aussie Dick Worden in second place with 33 points, Bob Pearce third with 33

Stroke - Monthly Mug
Surely, I thought, it cannot be time for the Monthly Mug
we have just had it, and it cannot really be the end of August. I’ve only
just spent a fortune on Xmas presents, well it is and all I can say is
“doesn’t time fly when you are having fun?”
Dave
presents to Herbie.
Siam did not promise to be fun, as when we played it on
the Monday, all the greens had been cored, sanded, and were uncut. The holes
had not been re-located for some days either so it was with some trepidation
that we decided to go ahead and play there. The greens were a lot better,
but they still have a long way to go to get back to their best, still a game
is a game and after all you only have to win on the day, and the birds were
singing and it was cool after the rain, so set too boys.
Perhaps boys is a little bit over the top as I doubt any
of the players are not ‘Grand Fathers’ still this is ‘Quality Time’
and in their attitude all the players are ‘Boys”, so rough greens, to
Hell with it, lets have a great day and get back for the celebration.
On the day therefore the scores were not good for such a
prestigious competition and shooting par or better saw you in the frame. But
cometh the hour cometh the man as Herbie, hangover and all, came in with a
fine net 69 to win the Mug. Behind, the Flight was won by Kenny Mau with Net
71 in a three way countback that saw Bob Benda in second and Barry Kerr in
third. Fourth with a net 72 was Ebrahim always there or there about.
Back at the Cafe Kronborg Dave Richardson was pressed
into doing the presentation to Herbie as he promised not to smoke his pipe
till after the presentation so it didn’t look as if we were all crying.
The operation to remove Dave’s pipe was performed by Olive Oyle when we
hid Dave’s spinach.
Winner of The Mug: Herbie Ishinaga
Flight: First: Kenny Mau, Net 71; Second: Bob Benda, Net
71; Third: Barry Kerr, Net 71; Fourth: Ebrahim, Net 72
Steve says farewell with a flourish
IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at the Bunker
On Tuesday, August 26, the Bunker Boys chose the Royal
Thai Navy course at Plutaluang as the venue for their weekly medal
competition, in the hope that the course would be in its usual good
condition. They found the North and East nines better than other local
courses at this time of year with greens slicker than those at Khao Kheow
the week before.
The two divisions were cut at eighteen and under and in
division two Len Jones found his form again, on a course he enjoys, to
make a firm challenge, posting net 74. He was matched by Paul Rose to
share runners-up place, with Duncan McGee firing an excellent net 72 to
take the top prize. In division one PJ Redmond (net 71) headed Gene Scalf
(72) to take second place but way ahead, waving goodbye to Thailand two
days later, was Steve Nowell. His gross 77 epitomised the form he has been
in recently and his net 65 cocked a snook at the high S.S.S. for the North
and West nines. His return in November will surely see his handicap in
single figures.
Gerhardt Schulze and PJ Redmond shared the Bunker Super
Sawng award, with PJ recording a brace of birdie two’s in his round.
They should have been joined by John Preddy but his birdie on the
Lighthouse hole was in vain as he had not entered the fray. Thus his
consolation was the Bunker Banana Booby. More news at http://www.thebunkerboys.com
The lady loves
Banprakong
The Bunker Boys returned to the exquisitely prepared
course at Banprakong Riverside on Thursday, August 28, for their weekly
stableford competition. After seemingly weeks of golf on poorly maintained
fairways and greens the visit was to be the highlight of the month because
the course has the capacity for producing at least one stunning round
every visit.
It was not to disappoint this time either, with the
only upset being an over zealous starter who, once again, held the group
up before releasing them on “his” course and then allowed two Thai
groups who had missed their tee-off spot to interlope and hold up half the
Bunker field for the back nine.
This did not deter Yasuo Suzuki (35) and Harry Riley
(37) from their job of chasing Takeshi Hakozaki, who won the division one
title with 38 points. All three had managed to begin their back nine
before the starter had intervened! Division two saw the round of the day
as runners-up Jim Payne (35) and John Preddy (38) saw their efforts come
to nothing with Saranya Chaiyanont posting an astounding 42 points to
dominate the day. The tricky wind denied opportunities for birdie two’s
but Len Jones’ brief flirtation with form ended as his low score
challenged that of new boy Peter Brown for the Bunker Banana Booby. And he
even lost that as well!

1st Al Rolnik, 64
2nd Jimmy Little, 66
3rd Arthur Hancock, 67 cb9 31
4th Steve Nowell, 67 cb9 32
Lift and place was the order of the day as the B and C
courses looked rather damp and the looming clouds cast dark shadows over the
whole area. In the event the weather stayed bright with a stiff wind and
meant that the scores were a lot lower than expected. The in form “Big
Al” swept clear of the field by two shots to take the first of his two
wins in the week with “Little Jimmee” having to settle for second with a
very creditable score that would have normally taken the days honours with
ease.
Arthur Hancock and Steve Nowell placed third and fourth
respectively after a close countback.
The twos were shared between Christoph Vielle, Brian
Kelly, Yazuo Suzuki and B.J. Smith.
Farewells were given to Brian Kelly and Steve Nowell,
both returning to Europe to see if things are getting any better yet.

After a long break away from the Gary Player designed
course at Sriracha it was a very pleasant surprise to find that it was in
excellent condition with the greens playing as well as anywhere at the
present time.
Al Rolnik took his second win on the trot although the
lack of local knowledge meant a higher score than on the previous occasion.
Trevor Schirmer just held off Yazuo Suzuki with a scintillating back nine
four under his handicap.
The twos were shared between Peter Emslie and Al Rolnik.
Prior to the prize giving Richard Livingston, the
resident PGA Professional, welcomed back Ian Ashenden, the other active

5th B.J. Smith, 32 cb9 16
6th Stephen Beard, 32 cb9 14
7th Barrie Sherman, 32 cb9 12
Following his last outing when an unscheduled nine on a
par four destroyed his chances of reaching the podium, Christoph Vielle kept
a steady hand on his round to record his first win out of The Haven for some
considerable time and finished with a fine four under to easily take the
days spoils.
Arthur Hancock, with another steady round, was the only
player to get anywhere near Christoph.
Trevor Schirmer squeezed out third place by count back
from “Sumo Phil” to continue his rehabilitation to the world of club
golf after his narrow escape from retirement.
B.J., “The Doc” and Barrie Sherman made up the
also-rans in the winners’ circle with each trying to outdo the other for
the title of worst back nine. Barrie took the award for that as he managed
to record eight more shots on the back compared to the front nine.
The twos pool was shared between “Mad Dog” Jeff
McLaury and Mark Gorda, the latter attributing his prowess to the new range
of picturesque golf shirts, that he managed to buy as a job lot during his
recent visit to Indonesia, that let him get in closer contact with nature
and enables him to relax more on the course. There is no truth in the rumour
that Fobe will be picking up the design options for Thailand.
Back at The Haven, Richard welcomed new member Chang Suh
from Hawaii who showed a lot of interest in Gorda’ s attire. It was also
farewell to “Big Al” Rolnik and Peter Hall.

1st Place: Ian Ashenden & Peter Hall, 76 points
2nd Place: Brian Holden & George Jackson, 73 points
Man of the Match: Brian Holden, 40 points
It was a week of some comings and goings. A temporary
loss (he will return briefly for the Jackalope) is Brian Holden who led the
day with 40 points and was able to drag a heavy George Jackson (33 points)
up the podium to claim second in the once a month blind pairs event at Green
Valley.
The top step was occupied by the more balanced team of
Ian Ashenden (39 points, gross 69) and Peter Hall (37 points). It was to be
the first of three golds (albeit shared on this day) for Peter before he
returned to the front of the classroom in Japan. Two other notable rounds on
the day, which went unrewarded due the vagaries of pair golf, were Joe
Mooneyham and Frank Pilkington with 39 points each.

1st Place: Peter Hall, 40 points
2nd Place: Ian Ashenden, 37 points 20/14
3rd Place: George Jackson, 37 points 20/12
Starting the week Peter had but three rounds left in this
vacation and as with Sunday he made Tuesday count as well. Needless to say
his 40 points left the balance of the field adrift. Three players were
knotted at 37 with but two places left available. The bitter pill of defeat
was left for Serge Straeten as a fine closing back 9 18 points was
insufficient to garner the podium. A second level count back (final six
holes) was required when Ian and George were tied at 20 points on the inward
nine, the former outlasting the latter 14 points to 12.

2nd Place: Klaus Schackt, 37 points
3rd Place: Jim Munns, 36 points
If 40 points was successful on Tuesday why not try it
again? Peter Hall did and the result was another three-point victory over
the field. Peter may not (and, rest assured, the field will be checking)
recognize his new handicap. Klaus covered the family’s costs with a second
place 37 points. Capt. Fog edged Barry “The ******” on countback 18 to
17 on the last 9 to fill the last slot.

Ground control to Capt. Fog, “He’s won again”. In a
display that saved the day from being a non-counting day, the good captain
cleared the field by three points. That left second and third to be sorted

This day went to the Danes as Klaus prevailed, winning on the deciding last
six, 12 to 10.
3 Sisters Golf
On
Monday August 25, the weather started overcast and dreary. With the greens
being perforated, uncut and sanded, it made rough going for most of the
golfers. As I said, most. It seems that rough and tough Kevin Mitch loved
the conditions as he came in with 43 points, four infront of his nearest
competitor. Hitting his drives well and oblivious to the greens condition,
Kevin ate up the course at Siam. I guess he knew that Bob Moberg was
supplying the food for the day and was bringing in MRE’S which Kevin did
not have since he left the military. This made Kevin the winner for the End
of the Month to have his name inscribed on the Three Sisters Trophy.
The
“handsome” guy did it again in the 3 Sisters competition at SCC on Aug.
25. Kevin Mitch of the ‘Blue Parrot’ came in with 43 points. Mimi was
left holding the bag.
In second place all alone was Usa Chaisat. Usa shot a
credible 39 but was far short of Kevin’s 43. With the course in repair,
it was a very good score for the day. Following close behind was Paul
Kinner with 38 points then the field faded away into the distance. As it
was most of the golfers found the conditions difficult to deal with.
The day found Mimi Kirkland holding the bag. With long
grass on the fairways and greens uncut, it made hard going for Mimi as she
came staggering in with 10 big points. It was the biggest spread between
the winner and the cellar position since we started gathering for Monday
golf. We all felt sorry for Mimi having such a hard time today but there
were a couple of guys with 22 points that were happy that she was there.
Next week, the September 1, we will not be having our
normal Monday Golf. Most of the golfers will be participating in the
Tri-Nation Tournament down in Banchang but reservations will be open at
Siam for those that want to play our regular Monday Golf.

So it was that as the golfers met at Bobby Joes for a

The round went well and apart from the fact that on the
back nine we fell foul of the monthly competition and the normal 5 balls out
for a stroll, we managed to finish in a zippy 5 hours. Mind, the trees were
nice and shady and fortunately I did have a cart to sleep in, but there are
things one must put up with to enjoy oneself, and you ‘Will’ enjoy

Suffice to say the ‘Leader’ was back after his recent
operation so we were kept in our places, and we even had a first time winner
when Rod Perrin came in with a fine round to win easily. We didn’t care,
we were in the cool of the clubhouse and the table was covered with large
Heineken for the weak and Rainbow Ice-cream for the weaker.
Back at the 60’s Bar, in honour of his quick return
from his illness, by acclaimed Bob Benda was asked to do the presentation
after what Bobby Joe declared to be his best Clam Chowder ever.
Earning an honourable mention was Rick Evans with 3

Mike Franklin
Diana Seniors and Ladies played their monthly Open at
Pattaya Country Club on August 28. It was a fine summer day and the course
was generally in good condition with evidence of more cosmetic improvements
added since the last visit.
Stan Axon shot the best score of the day, returning 41
Stableford points to win the Seniors division. Arthur Hancock was runner-up
with a modest 35 points. For the Super Seniors, Arthur Bailey produced the
only other sub-par round with 37 points and took the winners trophy. Mike
Franklin was not too far behind with 35 points.
Toi & Daryl Blair were welcome visitors and Toi had
the privilege, as the only lady player, of winning the Ladies division by
default with a creditable 32 points.
Chris John, Gordon McKnight, Arthur Hancock and Bill Hoge
claimed the near pin prizes, while newcomer Les Winch and Bob Short had the
longest first putts.

The Square Ring
by Howie Reed
As you’re reading this I am wending my way via airplane
to San Jose, California for the Semi Annual Reunion of the Rat’s Nest. The
Rat’s Nest is a “large” group of men and women that attended San Jose
State in the 60’s. All would enjoy a libation “on occasion”. Almost
any occasion. San Jose State was like the Land of Smile without the bar fine
or closing hours.
Some days I just can’t get a break. I wrote, “After
all he (Ex Champ Simgmanassuk) had about as much chance of winning the fight
against Chavez as a Dancer at the Nevada does of appearing with the Rockets
at Radio City Music Hall,” I had no idea that I would be caught in a
tsunami of e-mails pointing out how wrong I was to use that analogy.
Here’s one.
“Dear Mr. Howie: Please be advised that Nevada dancers
are indeed qualified to dance at Radio City Music Hall. Amongst other
qualifications that make them unique is their ability to extract money from
farangs, cry on demand, eat at any and all times when food is available.
They would also qualify for academy awards and beauty pageants. They
basically support Mama, children, the remaining family and all their
“bad” habits, without being happy on demand. Their talents are
extraordinary by comparison to basic Radio City Girls who demand a Dunn
& Bradstreet before accepting a diner invitation.” I bow to age,
wisdom and common sense.
As I’m sure that both readers out there have been
sitting on pins and needles, here’s an update on WBA Super Featherweight,
Yodsanan 3K Battery and his desire to fight in the USA. When last we looked
in on the situation The Square Ring had placed his promoter in contact with
Major American Promoter Craig Goossen of Goossen-Tudor. “Yes, we would
love to promote Yodsanan here in the USA. We have tried to reach financial
arrangements with his promoter in Thailand on a number of occasions. Their
financial requests are too high. I would remind them that James Toney’s
first fight with us was for $25,000 (USD) and now he’s fighting on October
4t against Evandler Holyfield for millions.”
Boxing luminary Patrick the Flying Frog opines: “Hey
Howie, Just a quick work about Yodsanan 3k battery. He is a good friend of
mine and an excellent human being, what I don’t understand, he is 28 years
with a perfect record (40-2-1) a WBA WORLD CHAMPION. Why does this boy never
have a chance to box overseas and fight real boxers and make real money?
What’s wrong with his promoter, is he brain damaged? The last boxers he
fought were bumps, I trained with him and did 6 six rounds sparring, why
world ranked boxers don’t even make 2 rounds, buls***t, it’s not good
for his career always boxing bums, what if one day he has to box Freitas,
wawa, I don’t want to see that, it’s gonna be massacre cause he is my
good friend, so please Mister Manager Yodtong Senanan, do something about
it!” The Flying Frog, Patrick Van den Berghe from Patrick’ Belgian
Restaurant/Skydive Caf้. I could not agree more but remember
‘ThisIsThailand’ as the guy with the big paper in the city with the
traffic jams writes.
When last seen Wladimir Klitschko (40-2) was getting the
“beetlejuice” beaten out of him by Corrie Sanders. Like his brother,
after a loss or poor performance, he had a million excuses. Last Sunday he
got back in the ring against Fabio Moli (29-2) which prompted one boxing
expert to say, “The Brothers Klitschko fight more fighters with no talent
than anyone in the heavyweight division.” “I am looking forward to next
Saturday night prepared for more than 8 weeks,” Wladimir says. “I feel
pretty sharp and think it should be an interesting fight. All fighters from
Argentina are tough. He [Moli] has a good heart and is a tough guy. Every
fighter is dangerous.” It took Klitschko 1:49 of the first round and one
punch to KO Moli (29-3). The “tough Argentinean” took the referee’s
count resting on his knee. What a joke.
“I can’t wait for a rematch with Corrie Sanders,”
Wladimir says. “I want to stay active so that is why I took this fight. I
want to prove myself.” The only thing that Wladimir proved is that Moli
can’t fight. Most knew that as he had built his record having never fought
outside of Argentina.
Good news for David Tua. A purse bid was held yesterday
for Tua-Rahman III for the WBA Heavywieght title. This was the title held by
“Chicken” Roy Jones who is moving down to fight Antonio Tarver for the
light heavy crown. Seems Jones beat the only heavyweight champ that
couldn’t hit a lick (John Ruiz) so he moves on. For Tua it may be his last
chance at a title. He won his first fight against former champ Rahman when a
punch thrown after the bell discombobulated Rahman and led to a KO. The
second meeting was ugly as most, including the Square Ring, think Rahman
won. In answer to “For who the bell tolls” the answer may be David Tua.
Oh by the way, Chatchai Sasakul (41-2) and Ray Llagas (54-21-2) mix it up
today in Bangkok. How about them apples?
PH3 Run 1016
Well it’s Monday again, hash day. While getting the
beer truck loaded I was thinking rain in the air. Maybe numbers will be
down, but no a total of 95 turned up. Maybe because we did not have to
drive 30 km + to the a-site. It is all very well having these a-sites way
out of town, but we still have to drive all the way back to town, and
most of us get pissed, if we were in England we would all be locked up.
Anyway me and Nugget arrived at the a-site, lots of people hanging round
chatting.
Then my mobile rang. Miserable C. on the phone “The
bus has broken down 7 km out of town, send some pick-ups” nobody moved.
Strange. Eventually everybody started arriving. Sir Airhead was looking
at a picture of Star trek. Ewok and another girl whom I did not recognise,
they were all three dressed up in sexy dresses and Star trek had this
20’s style hair do with all these waves in it, then I remembered when
Sir Airhead used to have wavy hair, and it has been waving goodbye ever
since.
Form a circle, only one pair of new shoes, Apples
Turnover spending more money on Golden Delicious. Hares on in. Flying
Frog and V.V. V.V.’s girlfriend Short Time was there also. Apparently
it was her day off. The new job was wearing her out.
Eventually the run set off. I only did a short walk,
my knee was hurting again. It is either through too much sex or old age,
or both. Banjo had his GPS and was advising me about cures for bad knees,
when Missing Personality passed with his GPS, he has been trying to find
his wife for the last three weeks. She was last seen in Lotus.
The runners started coming in, time for hot dogs,
BLT’s and cold beers. Blowfly and C. Face discussing the stock market.
Form a circle! The Belgian contingent came in for a down down for our
friend Sneak Out Sprout who passed away a couple of weeks ago. R.I.P. Sir
Sweetballs on in for his 500 run shirt and this on his 501 run, he was
the last runner back in. The usual returners, leavers and virgins. A load
of anniversaries, 100 runs, 200 runs, 250 runs, 500 runs, and even 600
runs, shirts and mugs. Rottweiler with a very small 200 run shirt that
would have fit C.’s new baby. Sir Airhead the bad RA immediately iced
the other bad man A.-holeo, photographic evidence of rule 6. He was
presented with a bright pink toilet seat. The bright pink matched my eyes
this morning after going to the happy hour at Classroom 1 and then on to
other bars. Nugget did not make school either. I think everybody enjoyed
themselves. The virgins I spoke to said they did. Charlie Manson will be
out encouraging young kids to take up smoking. Apparently he is doing a
demonstration at school no.7 today. So it’s good night from me and see
you all next week.
On On
Sir Chicken F.
Don’t forget next week is the Veterans Run when the
hash gives something back to the regular runners. 62 runners have
qualified for the free run and free t-shirt.
Correction
We
inadvertently mislabelled this photo last week. The Thai-Ger Line tournament
winner was, of course, Matt Kirkland (left).
