Yacht racing at Pattaya: Varuna Cuppers have their uppers
Although the economy during 1998 was - and still is - in dire straits, yacht racing in the Kingdom was thriving, right on course, plying the other straits. Even with practically no assistance due to the economic crisis, a most active yacht-racing programme was pursued during the year. Iridiums late entry as a sponsor for the Phuket Kings Cup Regatta - the years last event for big yachts - together with other supporters of the Regatta, ensured that it was "the best ever!" (Part One)
Peter Cummins reports from Pattaya and Phuket
That 1998 was not a good year for the economy has been rather evident. Yet, in spite of that - or, maybe because of that - it was, conversely, an excellent year for yacht racing in the Kingdom. Naturally, in a year of down-turn, there was little sponsorship for the Royal Varuna Yacht Clubs Pattaya-Jomtien circuit and club racing. Earlier in the year, nevertheless, generous support for the Thailand Catamaran National Championships was forthcoming from Volkswagen and later in the year, Loxley Video Post held its annual race.
Support - even for the Phuket Kings Cup Regatta, sailed each year in December to celebrate His Majestys birthday - was flagging badly. Then a windfall - at least for the Phuket event - came from Iridium Southeast Asia, whose motto "freedom to communicate - anytime, anywhere", makes it the perfect transmission link for craft at sea.
Iridiums very timely entry as the principal contributor to the Twelfth Regatta ensured the success of this years event. Or, to re-phrase that somewhat, it could be said that Iridiums eleventh-hour support came in time for the twelfth year of the Regatta which finished on the twelfth day of December.
The yachting year, regardless, went out with a flourish, with four big events in the last two months: the highly-successful Asia Pacific Laser and Laser Radial Championships at the Royal Varuna Yacht Club in South Pattaya (reported in full in Pattaya Mail, November, 13, 1998); the 1998 international Varuna Cup, also held at Royal Varuna (Mail, 25 December, 1998); the Thirteenth Asiad yachting spectacular, held off the Royal Thai Navy yachting centre at Sattahip (Mail, 18 December, opening of the Sattahip centre; Mail, 20 November, Asian Games); and the Twelfth Phuket Kings Cup Regatta, sailed off the Kata Beach Resort, Phuket.
Si Racha sailor Radab Kanjana-Vanit was the best-placed Thai helmsman in the just-ended Kings Cup Regatta, sailed on the beautiful Andaman Sea, off Kata Beach, Phuket. Radab placed second in the Ocean Cruising Class, at the helm of "Cedar Swan", an F-31 catamaran built by his late father Rachot who, sadly, passed away during the Eleventh Regatta last year.
It was a close struggle, but the personable Radab had to concede the honours to Phuket-based Kiwi Muzza Nordstrand, sailing a new prototype hi-tech US designed trimaran, "Fine Pitch", built in the Philippines. But wherever he was around the course, Radabs "Cedar Swan" was easy to identify by the sponsors Iridium black spinnaker.
The Phuket Kings Cup Regatta was established in 1987, as a birthday tribute to His Majesty King Bhumibhol Adulyadej, on his 60th birthday. The King, a regional Games Gold Medal dinghy sailor himself, is the Regatta Royal Patron. This years event had a record fleet of 81 keelboats, with some 1,000 participants from 20 countries.
Neil Prydes Sydney-built Bashford 46, "Hi Fidelity", narrowly beat Aussie yacht "Yo!", helmed by Peter Ahern, to win the Racing Class honours.
It was the sweet smell of success for Neil, the renowned Hong Kong-based sailmaker who saw his dreams realized when he emerged as the Racing Class winner, after several years in the minor placings.
It was, indeed, a great - and very popular - victory for the New Zealander who is a long-standing participant in and an ardent supporter of the event. Neils "Hi Fidelity" on seven penalty points was 3.5 points clear of "Yo!" at the final count, after five races, with one discard. Filipino Ray Ordovezas "Karakoa" placed third, on 14 points.
Early regatta leader, Swiss mountaineer and Olympic helmsman, Andreas Bienz, forsaking the Alps for the Andaman, helmed "Jenny III", chartered from Singapores 1993 winner, Jeffrey Leow, to finish equal-fourth, with Hong Kong Yacht Club Commodore David Hong, on 15 points.
Next week: A Cuppa Lipton...
Happy Pattaya New Year Sailing, 1999!

Pattaya Readies for the 1999 Pattaya Orphanage Charity Soccer Match
Children at the Pattaya Orphanage and organizers are gearing up for the 5th Pattaya Orphanage charity soccer match, set to kick off on Saturday, January 30, 1999, on the soccer pitch inside the Pattaya Orphanage.
Each year the event gets better and better, as much needed funds are raised for the many charitable programs run by Father Ray Brennan.
Although the Mighty Orphans won the inaugural event in 1994, for the past three years the Pattaya Drop Outs, a rag tag team of Pattaya bar owners and sponsored players, have emerged victorious. Each time, the outcome of the event has been determined by a penalty shoot-out after neither side was able to produce a clear winner in regulation time. Whatever the outcome, all who participate emerge winners.
Both sides have been seen in heavy training, the Orphans running wind sprints and practicing precision plays, while the Drop Outs are engaging in heavy sessions of elbow bending. This can only mean that once again, the outcome of the games are anybodys guess.
What is for sure is the fact that everyone who attends this fun event, be they players or spectators, will come away winners. Each year this special day, with the games almost a side-show to the fun of the picnic type atmosphere for spectators and children, provides much needed contact between the children of the orphanage and the kind hearted people of the community. Food and beverage will be on sale with all proceeds going to charity.
The main goal of the event is still to raise funds for the many programs run by Father Ray Brennan, including the children of the Pattaya Orphanage, the Handicap School, the School for the Blind, the School for the Deaf, the Street Children and the Stateless Old Folks project.
Organizers of the event would like to thank last events sponsors and encourage them, as well as new sponsors, to once again contribute to this worthy cause.
Last event, held two years ago, the main sponsors were the Pattaya Sports Club, Ray (Papa San) Rogers, Siemens, Pattaya Mail, the Diana Group, the Pattaya Hash House Harriers, McConnel Dowell, Beta Clough, Orchid Trading, and Pacific Consulting & Development Co., Ltd. Other sponsors included Beer Put, Pleasure Dome, Pattaya Sports Supply, Jimmy Macs, Bill Jones, Classroom 1 & 2, Hare House, Rodger, Bill Thompson, Brian Imrie, Ciano Glavina & Joy, Neils Colov, Londoner, Andy Moore, Alwyne Lomax, Steve Rogerson, Team Glia Racing, Jeff Slater, Mickey Noon, The Computer Link, Deepak, Sanjay, Green Bottle and Green Tree. Many thanks to all.
People and organizations interested in adding their names to this list of benevolent sponsors of this worthy event can contact Father Ray Brennan, tel: 428717, 422745, or fax: 716629, or Harry Riley, tel/fax: 720536, or John Cole, tel: 411667.

The weekly Pattaya Sports Club softball game on Sunday, December 27 pitted the Pattaya Pagans against the Jomtien Jesters. After getting creamed in the opener, the Jesters came back to steal the nightcap and split the doubleheader.
The opener saw the Pagans come out swinging and put up seven runs in the first inning. Gordon Lightfoot and Vibrating Jay each had RBI doubles during onslaught.
While holding the Jesters scoreless, the Pagans added two in the second, one in the third and eight in the fourth highlighted Mike (Mr. Ice) Bergs three run homer.
Down eighteen zip, the Jesters managed to push two across in the fifth with Rick The Commish and B.S.D. Doug each driving in one.
The Pagans added two in the fifth to complete the scoring and secure a twenty to two victory.
The second game was a see-saw battle with the Jesters breaking out on top with one in the first.
The Pagans came right back with three in the top of the second. Kiwi Rick, whose defense at first base earned him MVP honors on the day, had an RBI double.
Not to be outdone, the Jesters recaptured the lead with four in the bottom half of the inning when Slammin Sammy blasted a grand slam to left.
After a scoreless third, the Pagans took back the lead with four in the fourth thanks to clutch hits by Curious Curt and Tennis Ball Paul. The Pagans extended their lead to nine to five with two in the top of the sixth.
But the Jesters refused to go quietly and in the bottom of the seventh consecutive RBI singles by Dick (The Stick) Cagg, Maple Leaf Rick and M.J. (Coffee) Jim set the stage for John (Fowl Ball) Macallen. With two on and two out, Fowl Ball smashed a double to right center bringing home the winning run and giving the Jesters a ten to nine victory.
Games are every Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at Pattaya School #7 on Sukhumvit Road just past Greenway driving range and Caltex gas station. Equipment is provided and refreshments are available. Everyone is welcome to participate.

Celebrating Christmas week on the golf course
PSC TAGGS... golf from the Hare House
Wednesday, December 23 - Laem Chabang International Country Club (Two Man Scramble)1st: Mats Lindborg & Mikael Soderborg, gross 68, net 65
2nd: Rick Bevington, Brian Clayton & Al Kloss, gross 79, net 69.9
3rd: Norman Brooks & Roger Errington, gross 78, net 70.4There is nothing wrong in a 30 handicapper shooting five under par to win a tournament. How else is one to lower ones handicap other than bettering it? Still, its hard not to take increased pleasure when low handicappers produce a great round and win a competition.
In the TAGGS Two Man Scramble at Laem Chabang on Wednesday, Mats Lindborg, playing off six, and Mikael Soderborg, playing off nine, shot a gross 68, a score that was better than the other fourteen teams net scores and won the tournament by almost five strokes. Playing the "A" and "B" layouts, Mats and Mikael had a bogey free round, shooting 34 going out and 34 coming back to win themselves a nice Christmas present.
In second place was the menage-a-trois of Rick Bevington, Brian Clayton, and Al Klos. How do you get three guys on a Two Man Scramble team? The head honcho of your golf group has to be an accommodating kind of guy, like Stephen Beard, chairman of TAGGS. Because an odd number of golfers showed up, Stephen allowed Rick, Brian and Al to play together as a team, permitted them ten percent of their handicap total, and wished them good luck.
In third place was the duo of Norman Brooks and Roger Errington. Shooting a gross score of 78, Roger and Norman parred the last five holes to take the third spot on the leader board.
Friday, December 25 - Century Golf & Country Club Rayong (Stableford) 1st: Norman Brooks, 37 points
2nd: Drake Smith, 36 points
3rd: Stephen Beard, 36 pointsWelshman Norman Brooks, playing off seventeen, scored 37 points and won the TAGGS Stableford Christmas Special at Century Rayong on Christmas Day. Surprisingly, this was only Normans second win in singles competition this year out of the Hare House. It is surprising because Norman is a fine golfer and he plays the TAGGS competitions regularly. His handicap hasnt varied more than a stroke in the whole of 1998. In fact, Normans game is so steady that it would be unusual for him to pull a five under par out of his golf hat and win a tournament going away like others whose handicaps go up and down like the stock market. It would also be unusual for Norman to shoot five over his handicap and take himself out of the running in a competition. On this day, Normans well-oiled golf game won the day.
Taking second place in a count back was Canadian Drake Smith who finished just off the pace with 36 points. Drake beat out TAGGS Chairman Stephen Beard who took third place and then went back to the Hare House and gave away the company store. Seventeen prizes were awarded for this Christmas Day Special. It wasnt a white Christmas, but it was definitely Christmas.

Café Krongborg Starters in top form
Pattaya Sports Club Golf from the Cafe Kronborg
PHOENIX - Monday 21st December (Stroke) A perfect seaboard winters day produced two winning scores from Dave Richardson and Bernie Tuppin. Returning net 70 and 69 respectively, they were unaffected by the persistent off-fairway rough on the Lake and Ocean Courses. Although cut back somewhat, the lack of two levels of rough still presents some difficulty for most golfers and just bad luck on an otherwise reasonable shot. Full scores for the day were as follows:A Flight
Winner: Dave Richardson, Net 70
2nd: Ebrahim, Net 71 C/B
3rd: Svein Vistung, Net 71B Flight

Willie Mercer and Banjob Franklin Fayre best in Alecs Christmas Tournament
Eastern Star - Thursday, 24 December Fifty-five festive golfers enjoyed this annual fun tournament at Eastern Star on Christmas Eve. Fine sunny weather, a course in mainly good condition, and with no excuses on the excellent greens, the annual Stableford competition produced some good results.Willie Mercer took the A flight with 38 points and in the B flight Banjob Franklin recorded her best round ever to score 46 points. High handicap players have to start somewhere and persistent effort is bound to produce a good result eventually, the reward being that hard sought handicap cut. This was her day.
Ingar Opseth managed to take three of the eight technical prizes on offer.
The feature of this tournament is the Christmas gift exchange, made possible by everyone bringing a wrapped gift and all players receiving one in order of merit performance on the day. Alec Chilcott presented prizes and the proceedings were rounded off by a special presentation to Alec by David "Lumpy" Russell on behalf of all his golfing friends.

Sparky and Davies take PGS better ball
On Friday, 15th December the Societys annual Four Ball Better Ball Championship was held at Pattaya Golf and Country Club. A keenly fought battle ensued in perfect golfing conditions.
Triumphant with an impressive 8 under par were Englishman Joe Sparky and Welshman Tony Davies. On the day they proved an harmonious pair to achieve their winning total.
A close second was Norman Brooks partnered with Mick Durnian who together compiled a score of 7 under par.
Almost as close was Tommy Jeeves and Ger Hakze with 6 under par.
Hard luck stories abounded but Sparky and Davies were worthy winners.

Meigh and Mckay winners at Sattahip
PSC Pattaya Golf Society from the Bunker
A large compliment turned out at Sattahip for the Pattaya Golf Societys Stableford competition on Tuesday, December 22. Once again the length of the holes and the coarseness of the "grass" that is peculiar to the Sattahip course presented a tough task for everybody.
A fierce battle resulted in Division One where George Meigh, Kevin Wilson and Norman Brooks tied on 36 points. On count back over the last 9 holes George emerged the winner with Kevin being placed second.
This was particularly cruel to Welshman Norman Brooks who was playing off the lowest handicap. He scored 22 points over the opening 9 holes but by all accounts was so unlucky over the final half. Even so, Norman was closest to the pin over 3 of the 4 short holes and has to be considered most unfortunate on his visit to Sattahip.
Ger Hakze was the other winner of nearest the pin.
In Division 2, Peter Mckay triumphed with 39 points, followed by Pasi Venalainen on 32 points.
It should be mentioned that members and visitors are unable to enter the Society competitions unless he is in possession of an accredited handicap issued by the Pattaya Sports Club. This will be strictly enforced in the future, and written confirmation will be required.
