Pattaya Country Club Thursday 26th November 1998
There are those who would argue that Thanksgiving represents the best of holidays. There are no presents to buy; no elaborate decorations to put up; no loud fireworks going off; and no greeting cards to mail. The only requirement in celebrating Thanksgiving is to be with family and friends and eat a lot of food.
Papa Ray Rogers had the extended family of Pattaya Sports Club golfers and friends over to his house for a Thanksgiving feast that was truly wonderful. And Papasan has improved on the traditions of Thanksgiving Day by adding a tradition of his own: the eleventh annual Papa Ray Rogers "Turkey Day" golf tournament.
One hundred and twenty golfers teed it up at Pattaya Country Club on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 26. The main format was Stableford, but there were a host of technical prizes as well. In all, there were seventeen trophies presented by Mike Franklin, Chairman of the Pattaya Sports Club Golf Committee; seventeen trophies and one very important plaque in appreciation of the contributions of support to the Pattaya Sports Club and more importantly to the charities of Pattaya by Ray Rogers.
It was a glorious day for golf, with high clouds and enough wind to make you think about club selection before you hit. Pattaya Country Club was in good shape with smooth greens and lush fairways. The ideal conditions made for good scores and Serge Straeten won the A flight with 40 points.
Mike Larsen won the B flight with 43 points. The ladies best score was Annie Barrili with 40 points.
After golf, it was over the river and through the woods to Papasans house for roast turkey, baked ham, stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy, corn on the cob, and best of all sweet potatoes. This was not your usual "apres golf" cuisine. This was good ol down home cooking that was sumptuous by any standards. Congratulations to the cooks and to all those who helped in putting on a Thanksgiving Day celebration that was as fun as it was memorable.

Largest ever turnout for Can-Am 98
While golf in Pattaya is always popular, the game takes on a special significance with the arrival of the Can-Am Invitational Golf Tournament. Over this past weekend, when the world media was focused on the Volvo tennis, Pattaya quietly played host to a swarm of golfers coming from such faraway places as Europe, Japan and Canada.
The players and their guests were welcomed at a reception on Friday night at the Dusit Resort which accompanied the registration.
On Saturday November 14th the 18th Annual Can-Am Invitational golf tournament was held at the Siam Country Club. What started as a small, friendly event has blossomed over the years with the Can-Am growing to become the largest amateur golf event in Southeast Asia and the premier event on the Thailand expat golfing calendar.
This years major sponsors Pepsi, Canadian Airlines International, Hong Kong Transpack and AMJ Campbell saw the largest tournament draw ever, as more than 320 registered players took to the course in a morning and afternoon shotgun start format.
The aim of the Can-Am is to have fun and raise money for charity. On the links, the star of the day was undoubtedly 1-handicapper Darren Ottaway, who took low gross honours with a spectacular tournament record 68. Off the course the big winner was Father Ray Brennan, recipient of Baht 100,000 in cash raised by the all-volunteer Can-Am Committee.
This years programme also featured the introduction of a players card, developed to support local business. Many Pattaya merchants, such as Delaneys, offered discounts to the more than 600 participants in the Can-Am weekend. This programme will be repeated next year and the Can-Am organisers actively welcome the participation of Pattaya business.

Rising Sun remained undefeated in the current season of the Mickey Mouse Darts League after eking out a narrow victory over Pleasure Dome. During the very tight game, Alex from Pleasure Dome tried to dance his way to victory and scored a perfect 180, but the Dome came unstuck on the final leg of the match when Richard from Spain, England and Thailand checked out on Double 16 for the match & beer leg.
In other week 4 matches, Beer Put beat Palmers at home in the match and beer leg. Cheers beat Micks Place to chalk up their first victory of the season, but lost out on the beer leg.
Jenny from Micks Place still holds the highest check out so far with 137.
This week (Friday, December 4) sees Pleasure Dome vs. Palmers, Beer Put vs. Cheers, and Micks Place vs. Rising Sun.

Pattaya Sports Club Christmas Party
The always much anticipated Pattaya Sports Club Christmas Party, an annual event that brings together sportsmen and women from all walks of life to a party too good to miss, this year will be held on Wednesday, 16 Dec. at the Thai House, North Road, next to City Hall. Doors will open at 7:00 p.m.
As the turnout every year for the Xmas party has been historically huge, and since the PSC has no way of knowing how many members and guests are planning to attend this years party, the PSC Executive Committee has decided to issue tickets in advance and limit the number of tickets to 500, due to the limited number of seats available.
Tickets will be available as follows: At the Thai House from 2 December thru 5 December from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Any remaining tickets will be available at the PSC office on Soi Diana Inn from 7 December.
Everyone will need a ticket to attend the party. Please present your PSC card when picking up the ticket and pay 600 baht for your guest, if any, at that time. Only one guest per member. At the party present your ticket and show your PSC card at the door. Then enjoy the party!

Pattaya Sports Club helping out in the community
Banglamung Boys School, which has over 200 students, recently informed the Pattaya Sports Club that they could do with a TV for the main classroom as a teaching aid.
This being one of the PSCs ideals; helping to educate the local youth, the Sports Club responded by donating a large screen TV.
Pictured here are the principal and staff at the school thanking Ron Herbert (PSC Secretary), Harry Riley (Charity Chairman) and all the members of the Pattaya Sports Club for their generous donation.

Handicap Committee Ruling 17/10/98
Visiting Pattaya Sports Club members with PSC Handicaps from a previous visit who are not on the current Handicap List, i.e. have not submitted a scorecard during the past six months, must confirm their most recent handicap in order to be moved to the current list and for that handicap to be recorded.
In order to do this, present your Home Club or Society Handicap Card to the PSC Tournament Director at the venue on the first occasion you play in a competition. Alternatively, contact Handicap Chairman Bill Thompson at 411804, or PSC Golf Chairman Mike Franklin at 731144.
Players with a handicap on the current PSC Handicap List who have been away, and have a current Home Club or Society Handicap which is lower than their PSC Handicap, must declare this on the first occasion they play again with PSC Golf, and play off the lower figure.
Failure to do this will mean disqualification in a PSC competition with no return of entry fee; or if intentionally not declared, possible loss of USGA Handicap.
The standard procedure for players without any form of handicap validation from PSC Golf or elsewhere is to submit five scorecards together, signed by a PSC Member, for a USGA Handicap to be given and a computer record to be entered.

Karlsson gleans TAGGS trophies
PSC TAGGS... golf from the Hare House
Wednesday, November 25 - Laem Chabang International Country Club (2 Man Scramble)1st: Russell Finch & Anders Karlsson, Net 66
2nd: David Beaver & Barry Wright, Net 67.2
3rd: Brian Clayton & Terry Walters, Net 67.6Pairing up Swedens Anders Karlsson with American Russell Finch is like putting Sammy Sosa with Mark McGuire. They both hit the ball a ton. And Laem Chabang is definitely one course where it helps to have your first ball way down the fairway.
Still, it takes more than "home runs" to win a golf tournament, but Russells long drives helped set the table. Anders cleaned up the dishes with a short game that was precise and deadly as he chipped in twice from off the green and didnt miss a putt under five feet all day. The pair won the TAGGS Two Man Scramble competition on Wednesday, November 25, with a net score of 66.
In second place were a couple of Englands "good ol boys" David Beaver and Barry Wright. Their gross score of 72 tied them for low gross with Anders and Russell, but their allowed handicap kept them a hair over a stroke off the pace and they finished with a net 67.2.
Geordilands easy going Brian Clayton didnt much mind who he was paired with and was coupled with TAGGS newcomer Terry Walters. Brians ambivalence turned to delight when he saw those 250 yard three irons that Terry was hitting off the tees. They ended up in third place with a net 67.6.
Friday, November 27 - Siam Country Club (Stableford)
1st: Anders Karlsson, 39 points
2nd: Mike Spear, 39 points
3rd: "Scotty" Scott, 39 pointsAnders Karlsson shot an 84 off his fourteen handicap to take the TAGGS weekly Stableford tournament at Siam with 39 points. This was another good week for Anders, who won the Two Man Scramble on Wednesday. By the time this report is read, Anders will be in the Philippines taking a vacation from the rigors of playing golf in Pattaya. In the month of November, Anders won three times out of the Hare House, once out of the Kronborg, and was on the winning team in the Banana Scramble. Gee, no wonder hes so worn out.
Also coming in with 39 points, but losing out on first place in a count back, were Welshman Mike Spear, who took second, and American "Scotty" Scott who took third.
A special thanks to Glen "Lassie" Dragland who donated an unusual prize of 500 baht for the fewest points scored. As it turned out, Lassie and Paul "Spot" Ovens, who was riding the same golf cart, were "dogging" it all morning and had to be disqualified after they were found asleep in the cart on five different holes. Its too bad because Lassie had a sure lock on getting back his 500 baht. Not to worry, though, the Tournament Committee has decided to keep the money in escrow until the next Stableford competition.
