Eastern Seaboard Corporate Golf Challenge ’98

The rain held off for the inaugural Eastern Seaboard Corporate Golf Challenge ’98 which took place on Friday, October 16th at Laem Chabang International Golf Club, despite thunder and lightening all around the course.

A total of 80 players took part, made up from top executives from companies on the Eastern Seaboard and Bangkok. All players were entertained to a light lunch after registration and then set off for their round on courses A and C. The tournament was a team event with 2 players per team.

Upon returning to the clubhouse, all players and some guests were treated to a buffet dinner with beer supplied by the organizers and whiskey by Ballantine’s. Some 100 people attended the dinner.

A raffle was held with all proceeds going to the Camillian Social Center in Rayong, which cares for AIDS patients and is run by Father Giovanni Contarin. Over Baht 15,000 was raised for the cause.

Nathan Smith of Nevista, the organizers, said, "The event went off smoothly although a few rulings had to be made on course rules. Everyone seemed to have a good time both on and off the course and at the dinner afterwards. We were lucky with the weather despite the threat of a storm later in the afternoon, and judging from the amount of beer and whiskey drank at the dinner all guests had fun."

Special thanks go out to the sponsors which included Qantas/BA who donated two return flights to Australia, Hagemeyer who provided a large amount of Moulinex products and Coleman Coolers, Royal Garden Resort, Ballantine’s and ABS Services who supplied caps for all players.

Prizes were awarded by Martin Fowler, MD of Hagemeyer, and Khun Supeepan of Qantas/BA.

These events are organized by Nevista every 3 months with the next one taking place early 1999. For further information, contact Nevista on (02) 318 4639 or (02) 717 6191.

Big week for Malcolm Clare & Russell Finch

PSC TAGGS... golf from the Hare House

Wednesday, October 28 - Phutaluang Royal Thai Navy Golf Course (Pairs Scramble)
1st: Malcolm Clare & Russell Finch, 68.6 Net
2nd: Norman Brooks & Giano Glavina, 68.8 Net
3rd: Vic Cross & Anders Karlsson, 69.0 Net

Twenty-four golfers split into twelve teams for the TAGGS Pairs Scramble competition on Wednesday down in Sattahip. Playing the tough C and D layout, the gentlemen from the Hare House needed to be long and longer with the course stretching 6,800 yards from the white tees. Malcolm Clare picked his partner well. Selecting Russell Finch for his booming drives, "Ol Pin High" didn’t disappoint as he kept his pull hook in check and his ball on the fairway... way down the fairway. Russell, in turn, picked Malcolm for his reputation as a "specialist". Maybe Malcolm should be nicknamed "the Mechanic" for his unerring ability to stick it between the ribs of the other team in the foursome when they least expect it. Long putts, chip ins, and beautifully crafted shots would come out of the blue to augment Russell’s game and win their Nassau handily. Oh yes, they won the competition as well with a net score of 68.6.

In second place and just two tenths of a stroke behind the winners were Norman Brooks and Giano Glavina. Both these golfers are rock steady, with handicaps that don’t go up and down like the heart rate of an elderly go-go patron. They started the competition with five consecutive pars and ended the day with a gross 75 (net 68.8). It would not be surprising to see these two pairing up again somewhere in the near future.

With the forecast calling for clear skies, Vic Cross made the short trip down Soi Post Office to the Hare House whereupon he found Anders Karlsson looking for a partner. This was yet another pairing of a long ball hitter (Anders) with a short game wizard (Vic). They almost pulled it off. Shooting an even par 36 on the first nine, there were visions of sugar plums and free beers dancing in their heads. They woke up on the back nine and shot a 40 as the Knotted Putter Trophy slipped away by just one stroke. They had to settle for third place with a net 69.0.

Friday, October 30 - Siam Country Club (Stableford)
1st: Malcolm Clare, 52 points
2nd: Russell Finch, 39 points
3rd: John Taylor, 37 points

On a Clare day you can score forever. Before Friday, Malcolm Clare, playing off a 36+ handicap, had never broken a hundred. Playing in the TAGGS Stableford competition at Siam Country Club, he came very near to breaking ninety. Shooting a point total not seen since the Charity Classic when one could use thirty-six mulligans, Malcolm finished the day with a 92 and a Hare House record of 52 Stableford points. Only a high handicapper could manage to snare 52 points. Or maybe not. Al Geiberger probably came close to 50 points on that hot summer day in Memphis when he shot a 59.

The old cliche’ "when you’re hot you’re hot" certainly applies to golf. On Wednesday, Malcolm won the Pairs Scramble partnered with Russell Finch. On Friday, Russell came in second to Malcolm in the Stableford competition with a very respectable 39 points. Of course that was 14 points shy of winning the tournament. Russell probably could have managed those fourteen points if he had been give another nine holes to do it.

John Taylor had 37 points to take third place. He is probably still muttering to himself. But don’t feel alone John. If you asked Steve or Woody or Vic or anyone else who has partnered with Mr. Clare in the past, they would have agreed Malcolm’s handicap should have been 52. They would have said elephants will tap dance down Beach Road before Malcolm Clare scored that well. Just be careful crossing the street for a dip in Pattaya Bay.

Tippy’s off to undefeated start in Friday Premier Darts

In week 5 of the Friday Premier Darts League, Tippy’s trashed the Bunker and took the beer leg to start the season with their fifth straight win. Talk was heard that Tippy’s was going to have a nightmare, but it seems as the Bunker were dreaming their self.

The Rose Garden beat Murphy’s and took the beer leg in a very close fought match and what made it rosier was Lindsay from the Rose Garden checked out on a 121 to take the league’s highest out to date.

Sports Corner are making a charge for the top after they won the match and the beer against the Thistle.

The last Resort slid down a place after they lost to Billy & Da but managed to take the beer leg.

Texxan Inn took the match but lost the beer leg to SGP Bar.

Joe from Last Resort has achieved a perfect 180.

Stratton “Serges” to the medal

Splinter Golf Group

Mon, 26th Oct - Khao Kheow

A flight:
1st: Sven Berthelsen - net 69
2nd: Stan Fry - net 69

B flight:
1st: Mike Phillips - net 70
2nd: John - net 71

Weds 28th Oct - Great Lake

2nd: Neil Hughes - 36 pts

Fri 30th Oct - Green Valley
1st: Serge Stratton - net 71
2nd: Jerry Quin - net 72
3rd: Sven Berthelsen - net 72

In a busy week for the Splinter Group, there were several winners, starting with a fine performance by laughing Sven at Khao Kheow just winning on a count back. John Hurst returned from Phuket to shoot an excellent 39 pts off his 13 hcp, although we don’t know what he was up to in Phuket.

The win of the week, however, was by Serge, shooting an excellent net 71 off his 22 hcp. to win the Monthly Medal at the tough but excellent Green Valley. He was closely followed by Jerry Quin and Sven again!

In other news, a rather disturbing story emerged from the Splinter Secretary Steve Ross, who reported an altercation with a nice Thai man in a service station rest room. Do you mind if we call you "Can I touch you" from now on?

PH3 Run 763

19/10/98 - Hares: Charlie Manson and Sharon Tate.

It was a stormy day for Charlie Manson’s last day of freedom. As the bus full of runners arrived at a Cambodian refugee camp, some visitors were overheard saying, "Gee, I didn’t know we were that close to the boarder!"

Chicken F. got us together and took care of the ones with new shoes. Then Charlie Manson and Sharon Tate sent us on our way.

Seagull SH. and Seagull Surfer followed Airhead and Duck F. down the railroad tracks and into the leech infested pond.

No-one remained dry, although some gentleman carried their ladies through the water at first. That ended when Seagull SH. fell flat on his face with Seagull Surfer on his back. Then it was every lady for herself.

Boy George, our no. 1 front runner, fell in love and for the first time came in dead last, holding hands and a big grin on his face, coming in after dark.

As the refugees were going to bed the circle was called. Chicken F. iced the hares, and as soon as Airhead recovered from his bout with some respiratory problem, hammered the sinners. Uncle Fester got his reward for his 200th run, as did Smart F. for her 50th. Congratulations! Charlie and Sharon received their unique holiday shirts. After some good songs, it was back to Erik’s for the best food any Hash could ask for.

On On Duck F.

P.S. Charlie and Sharon would like to give a special thanks to the Hash management and all of the members for all the fun, support and good wishes. They will miss all the fun and I know we will miss them as well, but we all hope they return soon!

Look up the Pattaya Hash House Harriers on the Internet at http://members.tripod.com/~The_Nerd/hashsheet.html or email Susie at sng@altavista.net or call 364 185. PH3 meets every Monday 15:30 hours at the Hare House in Soi Post Office.
