Hole-in-one highlights 5th round of Eastern Seaboard Golf League
The 5th round of the Eastern Seaboard Golf League was held under ideal cloudy conditions at Buraphas West Course on Saturday, June 27th. The closest match of the day was between SPRC and Thai Oil, with the latter emerging victorious by a score of 3 1/2 to 2 1/2. The win moved Thai Oil into sole possession of first place over TOC, who had a bye this round.
The days highlights were produced on the closing holes in the singles match between Pat Riley (SPRC) and Khun Rewat (Thai Oil). Khun Rewat had a hole-in-one on the 5th hole to go 3 up with 4 to play. Many other competitors might have lost heart after such a blow, but it clearly galvanized Riley, who won the next 4 holes to take the match.
The Gee Gees rebounded from their woeful performance in the previous round, when they were hammered 6-0 by TOC, by beating RRC by an identical margin. It should be noted that RRC were short-handed, so one of the four ball matches was a walk-over for the Gee Gees. In a war of attrition, Mike Timbers edged out Sandy Lundie with his final putt on the last hole to win his singles match.
Auto Alliance, still in search of their first league points, lost to the Pattaya Sports Club by a score of 4 to 2. Auto Alliance were unfortunately without one of their star players, Khun Tira, who had other commitments. Who knows if they might have been able to eke out a draw had he been available? Alan Holleys (AA) birdie on the par 5 10th was memorable given that his tee shot ended up in the rough on the far side of the 14th fairway, making an already long hole that much longer. PSCs Dick Holt recorded the largest margin of victory on the day, beating Ken Catherine 8 and 6.
Besides Khun Rewats hole-in-one, other nearest the pins were won by Sangworn Blair (RRC) on the 8th and Doug Olds (SPRC) on the 11th. PSC maintained their lock on the long 17th, with the award going to Dick Holt.
Long Drives on the 6th went to Paul Kennedy (SPRC) and Wendy Dendel (AA), and Khun Winai (Thai Oil) and Gay Horan (Gee Gees) on the 11th hole.
With two rounds remaining this season, the league standings are:
