June and July are PSC fishing tournament months

The months of June and July have been designated as PSC Sunday Fishing Tournament months, with fishing tournaments scheduled for alternate Sundays beginning June 14th.

PSC invites all Sunday fishermen (and women) to plan your Sunday deep sea fishing trips now. Interested teams are encouraged to reserve their boats early because they are sometimes hard to get on Sundays. If you need a boat captain, call 038-410-228, or better fax 038-426-121 or email [email protected] for information.
Each boat entered is required to pay an entry fee of 600 baht to the Pattaya Sports Club. Entrance fee must be paid by the day before the tournament starts, and should include a listing of the name of the boat captain and names of fishermen entered.
Each team is responsible for hiring their own boat. There is no limit on number of fishermen (or women) on board.
All tournaments start no earlier than 4 a.m. and weigh-in time is 5:30 p.m. at the Pattaya Municipal Pier.

The Pattaya Sports Club will award trophies for the largest and second largest fish for each tournament. The fishing committee has established that for trophies: All Game Fish = weight x 1.0. Sharks, Skate, Rays, etc. = weight x 0.5.

Greer and Walraven take top honors at Thailand Open

John Greer from Kaneohe, Hawaii, USA and Sharon Walraven of Holland won the men’s and women’s singles and doubles titles at the Thailand Open Wheelchair Tennis Championships held at the Royal Cliff Beach Resort.
For Greer, it was his second trip to the Thailand Open winners circle. After winning it all a few years back, the jovial Hawaiian "hung loose" in the competition for a couple years to allow his fellow athletes to enjoy the winning feeling.

This year, however, Greer was not to be denied, as he dominated the men’s singles finals in straight sets, 6:3, 6:3 over Paul Johnson of Canada.
John Greer then teamed up with Paul Johnson to win the men’s doubles title, winning in the finals over the Thai pair of S. Muangprom and T. Wichiansri.
Sharon Walraven of Holland was also twice crowned champion at this year’s Thailand Open.
Sharon earned the women’s singles championship by defeating her compatriot Jessica Laumen in a straight sets walkover, 6:2, 4:1 in the finals. Sharon then teamed up with Jessica to win the women’s doubles title, defeating the Thai duo of S. Khuntasit and R. Techamaneewat in the finals.

Players entered the Open from nine countries, including England, Israel, United States, India, Canada, Japan, Korea, Holland and Thailand. They experienced excellent Thai hospitality and world class facilities at Royal Cliff Beach Resort.

SPRC gains first win in ESGL

The 5th round of the Eastern Seaboard Golf League was held at Burapha on Saturday, May 30th. A shotgun start at 7:30 saw 6 of 8 teams in the competition hitting off on the West Course. Kudos are due to General Manager Charlie Chuvapituck and his crew for the fine conditions that the competitors experienced on the course and the hospitality extended at all the drink stops.

In a clash of the cellar-dwellers, SPRC whitewashed Auto Alliance 6-0. In so doing, SPRC registered their first win in the series. In spite of the margin of victory, it was noted in some circles that throwing the likes of Ian Farrow and Alan Williams against a lone Wendy Dendel might not have been cricket, but then again this was golf.

TOC spanked the Gee Gees by an identical margin, and moved up into a tie for first place with Thai Oil. Some members of the Gee Gees were heard muttering afterward that they had not played up to their potential.

The rapidly up and coming PSC eked out a victory over RRC, 3 1/2 to 2 1/2.

Long drives went to Axel Blixberg (Gee Gees) on the 6th hole and to Khun Chanai (TOC), with a real monster on the 10th.

Nearest the pin awards went to Jan Meijerink (Gee Gees) on the 5th, Ibrahim (PSC) on the 8th, Roger Errington (Gee Gees) on the 11th and Peter Daff on the 17th. Daff said afterward that it was the best 9 iron he’d ever hit. At slightly over 200 yards, into a 15 to 20 knot breeze, Daff was one of the few competitors to even reach the green on the day. Despite the excellent effort, it will probably go down in Pattaya golf annals as the "furthest away closest to the pin" ever recorded.

Paintball Park and Pattaya Bungee Jump, two of Pattaya’s leading leisure attractions

Two of Pattaya’s leading leisure attractions, Paintball Park and Pattaya Bungee Jump, are located inside Pattaya Go Kart Speedway Circuit on Thepprasit Road. They are easily found, as the Bungee Crane punches the skyline at 56 metres!

The Directors, Richard Bunch, Bryant Berry, Ron Herbert and the crew are all very enthusiastic about the facility and this is reflected in the attention to detail. You are immediately struck by a welcoming atmosphere and a truly professional approach. This is very important as both paintball and bungee jumping are participant sports, which without the correct supervision could be dangerous. They are very proud that there have been no accidents at their complex.

To give an introduction to paintball: it is a game of skill, strategy and daring in which two equal teams compete against each other. The objective is to capture the opposition’s flag and get it back to your home base. During the game, players are eliminated when a paintball hits them and bursts, marking them with a vivid coloured non-toxic dye that easily washes off. Protective masks to protect the eyes and face, camouflage clothing and paintball marking guns are all provided. They recommend bringing your own ‘sensible’ footwear.

Bryant says it is a very exciting game, a surefire way to get the adrenaline pumping. He enjoys a game himself when he has the time. Games normally last between 20 and 30 minutes. The number of people present will vary but up to 30 players on each of two paintball fields can be accommodated.

Players come from all walks of life, inevitably they leave the site exhausted, sometimes a little muddy but always very happy! Many come back time and again.

Anyone over 16 or over 12 if accompanied by a parent or guardian can play, so it can be a family day out or birthday treat. Make little ‘Johnny’ the most popular boy in school.

Richard related that many companies use Paintball Park for both corporate entertainment and staff training. "It’s a novel way for companies to thank their customers and is very good value," he said. Paintball gives people of varying skill levels the opportunity to work together as team, demonstrating their ability to interact and communicate effectively. Someone who may be shy in the office often shines through as a great leader and tactician. Staff love the opportunity to zap the boss and the boss enjoys it too! Remember, "The Company that plays together stays together!" Packages can be tailored to suit specific needs; e.g. budget, arrival time and catering.

Ron said the Pattaya Bungee Jump is a well-known Pattaya landmark, having been open for 8 years already. "Last year it was relocated to its current position and we took the opportunity to completely overhaul the equipment," Ron said.

Do you have to be crazy to jump? Definitely not, bungee jumpers are normal looking everyday people just like you and I. They have real jobs, real families with real lives.

Readers may be interested to know the origin of bungee jumping. Commercial bungee jumping is relatively new, but the activity is related to the centuries-old ritualistic practices of "land divers" of Pentecost Island in the Pacific Archipelago of Vanuatu. There the men demonstrate their courage to the gods for a plentiful harvest of yams. But it was members of the Oxford University Dangerous Sport Club who, inspired by a film about "vine jumpers," plummeted off a bridge near Bristol, England, in April 1979 and thereby launched a new worldwide recreational activity. During the 1980s, the sport flourished, particularly in New Zealand. In the early 1990s facilities sprang up all over the world with cranes, towers, bridges and hot-air balloons serving as platforms. Thousands have now experienced that "ultimate adrenaline rush." Many have tried to describe that exhilaration; all share the post-jump elation and grin.

In addition to the Bungee Jump, Pattaya Bungee Jump offers the Catapult, which launches jumpers from the ground up. Why not try both? Pattaya Bungee Jump looks forward to welcoming new and old Bungee Jump enthusiasts alike.

The complex has ample parking facilities for cars and coaches, as well as a licensed bar serving drinks and food can be provided by prior arrangement. Even if you don’t want to play, why not come to relax, have a drink or two and watch the activities. Who knows, you may want to join in yourself!

For a limited period Pattaya Bungee Jump is offering a 50 Baht discount off normal prices. There’s never been a better time to try!

Paintball Park and Pattaya Bungee Jump are located at 248/10 Moo 12, Thepprasit Road, Pattaya (inside Pattaya Go Kart Speedway). Telephone 038 300 608 or 038 426 242.
