Rayong to host National Games

The Thai National Games, first played in 1964, were an idea of His Majesty the King. His Majesty felt that all winners of regional games should come together for a grand playoff. This would promote understanding and friendship between Thais from different dialect areas and cultures.

The first stage is provincial games. The winners of these compete in the ‘Regional Games’. The winners from the 4 regions then compete in the National Games, with a different province hosting the games each year.

Rayong, on the Eastern Seaboard, received the honor this year and the games should be exciting with some of Thailand’s most promising young athletes competing.

No Stopping the Rising Sun

In which country is Port Said situated? What is a maraca?

With both the Wednesday and the Sunday quizzes in the early stages of a new season, the Rising Sun is out there in front in both leagues. After only two matches in the mid week challenge cup, they are level pegging with Cheers and, on Sunday, have a clear sixteen point lead over their nearest rival. Answers to the questions above are Egypt and a percussion instrument.

Stephen Beard rules the week

Friday, April 17 - Phutaluang Royal Thai Navy Golf Course

Stableford

1st: Stephen Beard, 41 pts

2nd: Neil Hughes, 39 pts

3rd: Harry Riley, 37 pts

If the course conditions at Phutaluang were a surprise, the results of the TAGGS Stableford competition were not. Steve Beard has been playing well for some time now and he was at it again on Friday. Shooting an 87 off a 20 handicap, Steve garnered 41 points and won the day. He later remarked at the Hare House when the scores were announced that "Agincourt comes to Sattahip". Instead of long bows it was long irons, but the results were the same. The English swept the field with Neil Hughes coming in second with 39 points and Harry Riley coming in third with 37 points.

If you haven’t been to Phutaluang in a while, you might want to go check it out. The addition of the latest nine brings the total of holes up to thirty-six, making it the only club in the area with two complete 18 hole courses. The newest nine has been paired with the back nine from the original course and the result is one of the toughest tests of golf on the circuit. But not only is the golf more interesting in Sattahip these days, it is reasonably priced as well. Pattaya Sports Club competitors pay a total of 350 baht for green fees and caddy fees.

Wednesday, April 22 - Green Valley Rayong

Bogey

1st: Stephen Beard, 1 down

2nd: (three way tie) Jim Little, Harry Riley and Derek Reaper, 2 down

It was a beautiful day for golf. There was a steady breeze and big puffy clouds that kept down the heat. But Green Valley was playing tough and that’s all it took for Mister Bogey to come out on top of the gang from the Hare House. Not a single player would end up on the plus side of their match, although it looked like Steve Beard had his contest in his back pocket. The hottest golfer in TAGGS was two up with three holes to play.

But the last three holes at Green Valley are a handfuls and he lost them all to end the day at one down. Still you have to give the Englishman from London all the credit as he came out on top of the field for his third weekly tournament win in a row. The battle for second place was split between American Jim Little, Englishman Harry Riley, and Canadian Derek Reaper who all finished the day at two down.
