Matti and Little triumphant in Hare House Open 1998

Ray Matti and Jimmy Little won Divisions I & II respectively in the 2nd annual Hare House Open, held to commemorate Wayne "Groupie" Tischbern’s birthday, this year played at Phoenix Country Club on Friday, January 9, 1998.

On a high scoring day, Ray Matti compiled 43 Stableford points to outplay a competitive field, earning the championship trophy and other prizes for Division I.

Clive "Wrong Way" Pearce obviously got turned around into the right direction, putting together 41 points and earning the runner-up position in Division I.

Jimmy Little turned in the best Stableford score of the day, tallying 44 points and earning the championship trophy for Division II.

Richard Dumas, who confessed to "three-putting a few too many times and missing some ‘really’ short putts", nonetheless fired a 90 off his 25 handicap, compiling 43 Stableford points to finish second in Division II.

At the other end of the spectrum, Jack Levy, who saw more of the course than most while getting the most swings in for his golfing baht, achieved the coveted "Worse Score" of the tournament after carding more than double par on the course, a hard earned 155. For his hard work, Jack was awarded a bottle of Champagne and a bottle of Schnapps donated by Mats & Klaus Mueller.

Lassie’s coveted "Outstanding Achievement Award" was nearly won by Mats Mueller after he ran into a tree with his golf cart on the very first hole (Lassie was riding shotgun), but instead went to Ray Lepard for carding a gross 123 after starting his round with a 12, 9, 8, 8, 8, and 8. Nice recovery.

All 64 golfers were treated to a designer golf shirt, a fine day on the course, and Lamyai’s special bar-b-cue before the awards presentation ceremony at the Hare House following the event.

Other technical prize winners:

3rd place Div. I Tim Nuefeld; 3rd Div. II Kevin Mitch (both received T-shirts donated by Jim Aspin). 4th Div. I Jim Aspin; 4th Div. II Kevin Bukowski (umbrellas donated by Jim Aspin). 5th Div. I Mark Westendorf; 5th Div. II John "Oy" Gibson (head covers donated by Harry Riley).

Near pin winners, Div. I: L2 Ronnie Glaister, L7 Bill Thompson, O5 Jim Aspin, O7 Sven Berthelsen. Div. II: L2 Jeff Palladeau, L7 Ebrahim, O5 Patrick Asklund, O7 Drake Smith.

Jim Aspin won the long drive competition for Div. I, while Jimmy Little won the long drive for Div. II.

Best front nine for Div. I was turned in by Paul Ovens with 20 points. Best back nine Div. I was turned in by Gary Baxter with 23 points.

Best front nine Div. II was turned in by Gordon McKnight with 18 points. Best back nine Div. II was turned in by Drake Smith with 24 points.

Sven Berthelsen carded the best gross in Div. I; 81. Glen "Lassie" Dragland carded the best gross in Div. II; 103.

Best lady golfer, earning a bag donated by Jim Aspin, was Therese Lafrennier who shot 116.

Jeff Palladeau was presented with an umbrella donated by Jim Aspin for earning the best one-legged golfer award.

John Nield, who just recently won a long drive competition, fell the other direction and was presented with a "rocking chair" complete with a bottle of Chivas donated by Moe Deverdenne for "winning" the short drive competition.

Thanks to Stephen Beard, Richard Livingston and PSC Golf Chairman Mike Franklin, the 2nd annual Hare House Open was a well-run, highly organized tournament, fun for everyone who participated.

Happy Birthday Wayne!

Pattaya windsurfers strike again

The Mistral Monsoon Madness Windsurfing competition, well-known amongst insiders, was held between December 24th and 26th on Cherating Beach, Kuantan, Malaysia.

Decha Hommanee, a native surfer of Pattaya, won the fun-board competition in seven legs.

57 participants from 15 countries took part in this extremely competitive race. First runner-up was Germany and second runner up Malaysia.

After his triumph, Decha went straight to Singapore to participate in the Tudor International Race. Leading until the last race, insiders had him picked to win another trophy, even though the international competition was fierce and included the Vice World Champion, who finished second.

Unlucky, Decha fell to illness before the last leg and had to start with high fever. His bad condition pushed him back into fourth place overall.

Another Thai, Panuthat Luamsub, saved Thailand’s honour by winning the overall championship, while Sakunfaeng Kookiat, another surfer from Pattaya, finished third.

Big John takes "Player of the Month"

Big John Williams finished off 1998 with another great round, and in the end earned himself the "Player of the Month" trophy from the Pattaya Golf Society.

Big John carded a net 6 under par 66 in the weekly PGS outing to Sattahip on Tuesday, December 24th, winning by a full 11 strokes. The fine score enabled him to overtake club chairman Peter Johannson for the monthly award.

Alan Lamb finished second at Sattahip, carding a net 5 over par 77 on a course in very good shape. Kevin, Dickey Barbe and Gordon McKnight each put together rounds of net 9 over par 81 to finish tied for third.

Kevin earned nearest to the pin honors on #5, while Bill Nicol crushed the longest drive of the day on #12.

Big John Williams also started out the New Year with that "bandit’s grin" on his face. Big John tallied 36 Stableford points to win the first Pattaya Golf Society outing of 1998 on January 6th.

After scoring 15 points on the front nine, Big John geared up for the back nine, scoring 21 points en route to his second win in a row.

Les Winch finished second on the perfect day for golf, scoring 34 points. Peter Johannson placed third with 30 points, followed by William Rice in fourth with 29 points. Alan Lamb rallied for 18 points on the back nine to finish with 28 points, tied for fifth with Kevin.

Nearest to the pin prizes were won by Billy Russell on #12 and Colin Morgan on #17, while holes 3 & 8 remained virgins to competitors’ tee shots.

Pattaya Golf Society News and Notes: Roy "Tiger" Mitchell, by virtue of a great year on the golf course, earned Pattaya Golf Society "Player of the Year".

Vigilants tame Bad Boyz

Vegas’ Vigilantes tracked Baa’s Bad Boyz through both ends of the weekly Pattaya Sports Club softball doubleheader on Sunday, January 11, finally overtaking them in their last at bat, to earn a split on the day.

The Vigilantes grabbed a fast two run lead to start the first game. Sterling (Silver) Bechtel’s run scoring double being the key hit.

In the second, Mark (The Natural) Southampton smacked a homer to left and the score was tied at two.

After holding the Vigilantes scoreless in the top of the third, the Boyz went on a rampage and vandalized the Vigilantes, pushing twelve runs across the plate. Montreal (Uppa US) Robert, Kiwi Rick, and M. J. (Coffee) Jim all had run scoring hits, with The Natural belting his second homer of the game.

The Vigilantes could never recover and the game ended with the Boyz 15 - 2 winners.

The second game also appeared to be a rout with the Boyz up eleven to five going into the bottom of the sixth. But the Vigilantes’ sticks finally got on track, Alan (Leaving) Vegas and John (Baypoint) Bechtel brought in two R.B.I. and Dick (The Trick) Cagg’s triple to right scored two more, tying the score at eleven.

In the top half of the seventh, the Boyz eked out a run to take the lead.

After a leadoff single in the bottom of the seventh, Edmonton Rick at second grabbed a pop-up and Jimmy (The Key) Lockhead at short snagged a liner bringing the Vigilantes to their final out.

Unfortunately for the Boyz, the final out was Mike (Mr. Ice) Berg who promptly smacked a long blast to right-center for a two run, game winning round tripper. How’s that for heroics? Final score Vigilantes 13 - Boyz 12.

Want to be a hero? Come on out to Pattaya School #7 just past Greenway driving range and Caltex gas station on Sukhumvit Highway on Sunday at 2 p.m. Equipment is provided, refreshments area available and all are welcome.

Foster Wheeler Quiz Night

Foster Wheeler held a Quiz Night at the Moon River Pub, organised by Hilda Sheehan. Not only Foster Wheeler people showed up, but many other regular customers of the Pub joined the game. Glynne Moore, acting as the Quizmaster, did a great job by asking relatively unusual questions.

The winning team was the "Pattaya Piss Heads". 1st runners up were "The Three Mustadeers", and the third prize went to "The Barstools".

Hilda, who was very happy about the many participants and the great success, told Pattaya Mail that the next quiz will be held on 4 February at the same venue.
